I have tried to find through the search option to see if this topic has come up, but can't seem to find anything, if this has been discussed before, can somebody tell me the thread name. I have a couple of questions, that I was wondering if somebody can answer. 1. Is there a good place to get military items from? I have tried E-Bay, and for the most part, I think they are over priced. Am I correct in that assumption? 2. Has anybody model a national guard armory on their layout before? If so what type of buildings do you use, and what military equipment do you have? Just in thinking stage here. So all suggestions and comments are welcome. Steve
Walmart and some Hobby stores are carrying a line of 1:144 models called can-do. They have mostly modern equipment, M1A1 and A2s, Bradleys, 113s, MLRS and Paladins. They also make an M4 Sherman and M10 Tank destroyer. Arnold made some leapord 1 tanks back in the 80s and I have seen pics of a Leapord 2 in N scale. There are a number of companies that also make kits, GHQ is one, you can still find some Roco models as well. As far as a NG armory, usually the local town variety would only have wheeled vehicles as Tanks and Heavy Artillery pieces are mostly kept at Training sites and rotated through units that come for training. For an actual building, any decent size wharehouse, with fencing around the "motorpool" will work, or you could scratch build one from plastruct or Walthers modulars. GHQ used to make Sherman tanks, half-tracks and other WWII vehicles, but they discontinued these several years ago. The only tank in their current catalog is the M1A1 Abrams. Minifigs has quite a few N scale military models (http://www.minifigs.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=n+scale&x=11&y=6). Up until last year, Brooklyn Locomotive Works used to carry out-of-stock GHQ stuff, but they may be out or discontinued as of right now.
You could try deluxe Innovations for military hardware on rails. http://www.deluxeinnovations.com/current/releaseNewTooling.html Hope this site will help you. Cheers, http://cliffordconceicao3310.fotopic.net/c328807.html
I have a layout representing the trackage aboard a World War II U S Navy blimp base. I used 3 Model Power "Grandma's House/Bella's Farmhouse" kits to kitbash a frame headquarters/administration building and a frame barracks, scratchbuilt a WWII concrete wqter tower (to save steel for the war effort) scratchbuilt a concrete-frame, brick curtain wall vehicle maintenance facility based on ruins of actual building, scratchbuild a low-relief concrete-frame, brick curtain wall Navy store warehouse. N scale Jeeps and military-style trucks from minifigs Gasoline truck, forklifts, etc. modified from civilian equipment following photos in 1950s Navy yearbook in local library archive room.
I was in Caboose Hobbies the other day and I saw a new line they were carrying. Trackside Treasures. They had quite a few military items. I bought some of the jeeps and some of the 2 1/2 ton trucks. I couldn't find a web presence. But when I checked Walthers, I found a long list of items. Here's the link to Walthers: http://www.walthers.com/exec/search...&category=&scale=&instock=Q&keywords=&start=0 Eric
Roco makes the M113 APC and M109 SP Howitzer in 1:160 scale. Naturally they come in Bundeswehr camo. Cheers David
Steve: You didn't say what era, but for modern these folks have done well for me: Lineside Models GHQ's tanks are nice but pricy. Charger is right about the Dragon CanDo line; their Bradleys and howitzers drop right in, but to my eye the tanks are too big. Armories are usually older buildings, at least soemwhat similar to warehouses (assuming you mean the ones in the city). Charger's also correct about vehicle storage - usually the big stuff stays on regular military bases due to transportation issues (like trying to move a 62 ton tank on regular roads)
If you are into military modelling in N-scale, you should take a look here - BUT - be advised that you WILL need some available spare time to work your way through it! It also has a link to his original thread, and to his "casting your own" thread Have fun Shortliner(Jack)away up here in the Highlands
Thanks guys, Since my modeling for the trains will be in the late 70's to early 80's, that was also era that I was thinking of for my amory. I believe they had qunaset(?) huts for the buildings. Drove by my local Amory and all they have are newer buildings. If I could find a small amory that still had the quanshuts(?) then I would photgraph them. But I am just starting my search. Will be traveling up to Eastern Washington in about week, so will look for some in the smaller towns up there. I have already several tanks, and have purchased several jeeps on E-Bay, but am still on the look out for several of troop transport trucks from that era. Steve
Thanks Kenneth, Have purchased those quonset huts, and several other items that they had. Thanks for the information. Steve
