No, because the air is the same temperature at the running boards as at the top of the hood. In tunnels, the air is much hotter at the top of the hoods due to exhaust heat than at the running boards. :cat:
A couple of the members of the model railroad club I belong to have mentioned LTEX (Larrys Truck Leasing) and SD40 units but I didn't realize they were Tunnel Motors. I've seen some of those too... but didn't spot the 'see-thru' radiator grills along the rear. I guess the other factor that was interesting was that this Espee TM I saw was still sporting the grey/scarlet Southern Pacific scheme as well.
Joe, They may have picked up some more of them. The one I have seen most often in basic black is an SD45T-2 (MU’ed with various FEC engines) pulling the Ortners in and out of the City Point plant. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=140341 http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=242838 But as you can see, Larry’s Truck & Electric (LTEX) also does patch repaints as well as the full ones: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=79067 http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=151396
Thanks for your first comments, however it would help to stick to the original survey, answering points 1 to 4 first:
I was wondering what the "E" was for... everyone at the club just says Larrys Truck leasing.... now I know the 'rest of the story'... Thanks for the interesting pictures too. LOL... Espee with snow plows in Florida... must be getting ready for an unusually violent winter since it has been a mild hurricane season.
Funny how those Cotton Belt units ended up on Donner Pass. SSW had a better credit rating than parent SP, so a lot of power meant for use on the parent ended up wearing subsidiary reporting marks. Business property taxes levied by states also entered into the assignment of reporting marks. As a CPA you are aware of such things. :cat:
Absolute myth... been busted I don't know how many times on various forums. The air in tunnels is not miraculously cooler at the running boards... three 70+ hp fans blowing air straight up into a concave does that...
