I'm swapping the blistering heat of the Gold Coast for the freezing chill of Toronto for a holiday after Christmas. Just wondering if there are any decent model railway/hobby shops and railfanning locations worth checking out? The rest of the holiday will hopefully include a few days in New York City (shopping), Albuquque (railfanning the Transcon and hopefully shopping at a certain n scale shop) and a day or so in LA....probably not enough time to make it to Tehachapi though Any tips?
James lucky you I wish I was going with you. While in New Mexico you might see about visiting Pete Nolans layout but you will have to ask him nicely
I hope you have a car when in Albuquerque, because it isn't on the Transcon and from what I have read the only trains through are AMT 3 and 4 (Southwest Chief) and maybe a local or 2. If you can get down to Belen (which I think is the closest and you'll be right in the think of it) While in LA, for Hobby shops check out the Original Whistle Stop in Pasadena and if railfanning Fullerton on the BNSF is always good. If anyone replies about Toronto I would be interested myself as I will be there for a few days next September
Hi James Freezing Chill? Gawsh, this morning it is a balmy -24 Centigrade here in Toronto with the wind chill taking it down to -37 centigrade but we have a hot day in store with the sun out and the temp rising to -18 centigrade by midday Anyway hobbyshops. I have three for you here in the Toronto area, depending on what you have for transport etc. Centralish Toronto.. Georges Trains If you have transport.. my favorite with a big sale on from boxing day for a couple of weeks.. Credit Valley Also finally, a bit further out from Credit Valley Panther All web sites have addresses on them. A lot depends on your transport availability. Georges is the only one accessible from the Toronto TTC (Underground trains) and even then its a 15/20 minute walk from the local station Hope you have a good trip here. Regards
If I make it to Albuquerque, I'll be staying with a mate who has wheels, so a roadtrip out to the Transcon will be possible. I'd say it will be a busy couple of days trackside. I made it out to the Original Whistle Stop in Pasadena when I was in LA last year and if I get the time this time, I'll definately stop by again. Great selection of books, not a huge N Scale range. I still spent a bundle there though! In Toronto, we're visiting friends so we could have access to wheels again, so thanks for the shop links Graham! The weather experience alone will make the trip one we'll never forget. I've only ever seen snow once before - in Durango in 1992 - so a white holiday will be cool
