I bought something and returned it. Now my family account has a hundred extra dollars. I could be responsible and put it back in my fun-money account, but I'd rather buy something that will help my model railroad from its current primitive state.

So, what would you buy? I don't have much more than the hundred.

Since you put DCC as a choice, 100 bucks could get you 3-4 decoders...

If you don't have an airbrush, Get one! If you need decoders get them!
I would go with the airbrush, Learn how to use it and the results are gratifying. More decoders are always needed in my case,So I would go with that one also.

My layout right now is a rescued one- much track replacement and TLC required. I have no DCC, a Testors airbrush that produces Rorshach tests, two locomotives and a dozen or so cars (all Bachmann).

So far, unless DCC is cheaper than I fear, I think that the airbrush is winning.

Go with something else, replacement track, a turnout or two. Visit your local hobby shop and treat yourself. Maybe buy a kit to build.

    Have fun, Ken.

Several people say go for DCC. Can I actually get started in DCC with just a C note? I had expected it to be more expensive...

I have a double win situation. Need an airbrush goto www.airbrushcity.com they have great chinese copies of the badger dual action internal mix brush. Check them on ebay get a brush for 40 bucks and have 60 left over for decoders, track, or freight cars.

A "C" note will not get you very far in DCC. There are some starter sets which might be close... but you still have to buy the decoders for the engines which can get expensives if you have many engines. In your case only two engines... probably a good time to get into DCC. If you don't want to spend additional money to go DCC at this time then use the money to re-work that layout. You could revamp the scenery, add a new structure and another spur off the existing mainline (if possible).

Theoretically you can with a C note if you buy the Bmann version ($89 I think) BUT, and this is a BIG but, I would save some more money and get a Digitrax, Lenz, or NCE starter system. They are a better return on your investment as they are highly expandable and you won't have to buy twice.

Also, remember that once you get the command station or starter system, you will need decoders for your lcos. They run approx. $15 for the hard wired ones and $25 for the drop in plug and play ones.

You might want to assess exactly what you will need to get the layout you recently received in good working order and spend the C-note on that. :cat:

If ya need an airbrush, I say go with that.

OR< if you only have low end bachmann's, take this oportunity to spend it on a higher end locomotive. You can get rolling stock anywhere, anytime. Spend it on a good Kato, or something else you wouldnt normally be able to just drop in and "pick up" a good one.

If you decide on an airbrush, try Dixie Art supply. They have low prices and FREE shipping on orders over $45. If you want a GREAT airbrush for the price, try the Paasche VL set ($65). See:

Considering the season, perhaps a donation would be the best idea. Your choice.

    Fundmentals first!

Reading YOUR description of your layout, it sounds to me like an airbrush is way down on your needs list. Like Cleggie already said, track.

IMHO, The ultimate happiness you have with your railroad is smooth, uneventful operating and that starts with a good sub roadbed and track. Don't know the quality of your Locomotives, but they could be your second priority. Then DCC

10% to the Salvation army will also help some needy child have something in their stocking.

    Happy holidays,

From your description, it appears your first need may be to replace Bachmann EZtrak wtih Kato Unitrak. Prices per 4Nscale:
    K1 set $29.95
    K2 set $61.50
    V1 set $ 59.95
    V2 set $ 89.95
You may get better prices at Toy Train Heaven in PA. They regularly advertise in MR or MRC mags.
The sets will give you a nice oval with some variations for turnouts & a "high line". Even your Bachmann locos may run better on the Kato track.
The second choice may be to get a Atlas/Kato loco. One will have to be a converted car to pull your Bachmann cars.

The good news may be to watch in 2007 for new Bachmann cars with NEW automatic couplers. According to Mr Bachmann, effective with arrival of the Jclass Northerns & tenders, we may have seen the last of their old Crapido couplers. We'll just have to watch out for closeout sales on old standard line rolling stock. Santa may be flying over replacement parts from China??

The "something else", if you don't already own one, is a mototool, an accessory kit, and SAFETY GLASSES. If you do already own one then airbrushes are handy if you are, in reality, planning on using one.

I agree with Jay and the Motor tool (Dremel) idea. Another indispensible item if you don't have it is an Opti Visor. Even with the best of eyesight looking at tiny parts is tough.
