A Week After Thanksgiving I received a New Sanyo VPC-603 Digital Camera from one of my customers on my dry cleaning route ( The date is kind of backwards). So I tried it out the next week in Senatobia. These four photos will show you how they came out:

Grand Trunk Western GP38-2 #6228 (Ex-Detroit, Toledo & Ironton 1776) has Just passed Senatobia High School and Porter St. Now it's working up to The Fire Dept. and City Hall

Grand Trunk Western 6228 and Illinois Central (in CN Repaint) 6118 (Ex-Burlington Northern 6727) has just crossed Main St. Now they're heading towards Gabbert Park. Maybe My favorite places to railfan is not favorable in the mornings.

What's my favorite photos with unusual looking flatcars? They're seen here with the rest of local

GTW 6228 and IC 6118 are a few feet from approaching Main St.

My Artistic photos of the railroad crossing signals are coming soon.

Since No Train Came at that time of Night on the Grenada Sub. (As a matter of fact. I didn't even go into town that Morning.) I decided to take some artistic shots of the railroad crossing signals at Tate and Main St. Here are some photos that show some of the works:

Thanks, but I could do better than what I'm doing. Maybe in a few months.

I feel the same way about many of my shots. The secret as I understand it is:

    A) Try to be patient/calm when you're lining up a good shot. This can be hard (at least for me) since it can be exciting what with the rumbling of big engines and the vibrating of the ground and so on.

    B) Take lots of shots. Fill up your camera memory. Keep hitting the trigger. You can sort out the good shots later. When my friend and I went to Pennsylvania in October for train watching/photographing I took more than 600 photos. You'll be surprised at what turns out to be a good photo sometimes. And sometimes disappointed that the "perfect" shot wasn't so perfect.

The bottom line is to enjoy the experience. Sometimes I just let my camera go and watch a train go by without having a viewfinder between it and me.

Bit of an old cliche - but practise makes perfect - look at the results & try and work out why & how you could do better - for example:

There you go, you're already doing it. :) Maybe that's so - or is there somewhere to stand at that location the other side of the tracks so you don't end up shooting the dark side of the train and end up taking shots of the sun if you swing round?

Like SD70MAC said, keep shooting, keep trying new things, the amazing thing with digital is that it costs you next to nothing to experiment and you get to see the results straight away.

4th one posted is the best of the bunch, and pretty respectable i'd say - I like the pic (and I definately like the scruffy GTW unit! :) )

BTW - Date looks fine on this side of the Atlantic. :D There's probably a setting on there to change it though if it bothers you?

I admit those problems. But My real problem is that I'm railfanning at a line that doesn't have much train activity. Like the one where I taking pictures at now. If I try a railroad line that has much activity (like CN's Yazoo Sub), It'll be much better. But thanks for the advice anyway.

This Thursday, I decided to try the same place again. But this was in the daytime. Here are the two most recent shots

Up close view of the Tate St. crossing.

Photo looking south on CN's Grenada Sub. As you note some kids are playing around the tracks. That is not a very good thing to do, even when there's not much train activity.

Not bad first efforts for a new camera.

    Advice:
Read the manual, if you have one. Usually lot of good info. :) Learn what functions are available.

Shoot a lot! Practice! As someone said, take as many shots as you can. Memory cards are now cheaper than ever.

Shoot the largest, least compressed image possible. That way you can always crop your pics if necessary.

Thanks. But my camera was aiming up north to Memphis Those were taken at Senatobia. I do much better When I'm at some places like Memphis, Tenn. or CN's Yazoo Sub.

Now's here the north view of the Grenada Sub.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays The Northbound Memphis local would always come at 3:00, 3:15 or 3:30. But This Thursday disapponted me. Well, I figured, Maybe next time.

I was teasing about Senatobia being way North from Gulfport, at least 200 miles. :teeth:

    That's Okay

I get the drift, I thought you were saying New York or Chicago up North.
