So now I have a surplus of nice pine wood (on it's way to becoming seasoned) and I want to know what tips and tricks people have used to scratch build trees (pine) bridges (typical dimensions for trestle parts?) telephone poles (height x thickness) ties (dimensions) and such other commonly wooded items in your layouts. Pictures and dimensions would be great.

Yeah theres a little more work involved but I thought it would be cool to incorporate as much of my son's first Christmas tree into my layout as I could.

    Happy New Year!

I might use the stems/stick branches as tree armatures. Also, you can cut the branches and make log loads or sawmill detail.

Busy drying the critter now.... wide assortment of various thickness' which provide plenty of uses. Bark on for tree armatures and logging scenes. Bark off and stained plenty of trestle wood. Extremely straight dowel wood kind of takes away from textures and looks. Got the digital calipers now just looking for prototypical wood sizes for bridge usage. Ultimately will just buy premade cross ties aside from that I think the ole christmas tree's gonna come in handy!

A lot of people in my area seem to think old christmas trees belong thrown out in my front yard

    Xmas tree

We have an artificial tree now but always use to buy real trees. Never thought about the possible train link. I use to love to drag them out in the yard and throw a match on the thing and watch it explode in flames in a couple of seconds. That leads to another thought. Has anyone ever modeled a forest after a forestfire?
