I interviewed for a job today up in Pennsylvania. I was offered the position and I will be accepting. Now I have to look for housing up in the Wheeling, WV area. The next two weeks will be busy and no guarantee of immediate internet access when I move. Just to let you all know I won't be around much from later this week through February.
Great to get a new start! Challenges and all that! Wheeling, West Virginia? We had best start looking for the railfan spots. Looks like they have moved the Brooklyn Bridge over there. History of the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway
Good luck Pat. I always thought Wheeling was a neat place. I've been through there quite a few times. I always liked driving through that tunnel on I-70. Charlie
I know in the next two weeks I certainly won't have time to go railfanning up there. But Im excited at the possibilities within driving distance there. W&LE, NS, CSX, Union R.R., etc... The difficult part about Wheeling that most of the properties available in the area are on Wheeling island, which is downtown and floods 1 or 2 times a year. My layout was designed for opportunities like this, so I'm looking forward to possibly having a more permanent location for a while to get started on section 2. The delimma I am having is how to properly pack some of my freight cars. I will be posting a question about that in the Inspection Pit. I think we have some members from the SW Pennsylvania/Eastern Ohio area...perhaps I can meet some and get some railfan buddies who know the area.
Pat, it looks like you and I are in the same boat, I too start a new job in two weeks that is a move for us also. Good luck with your new job, hopefully you will find the ideal location. As far as storing your cars, Tina and I use http://www.trainboxesplus.com/ They seem to work well and are a bit more of a value for the money. Jim
Good luck with the packing, moving and the new job, Pat. Shoe boxes work well for packing loose freight cars. I use paper towels to help pad them.
Check the calendar shots: looks like a D&RGW tunnel motor, until you take a second look. A very sharp scheme! Cannot argue with D&RGW-inspired speed lettering! I use 3 TBP cases, and they rock!
I have an apartment on Wheeling Island, just high enough that it doesn't flood as bad as the rest of the island. Looking forward to moving in on saturday. Im going to get internet but after mid-day friday I have no idea when I will be back online.
I did some internet research on Wheeling Island. When you get settled, I would like to hear your opinion about the flooding and maybe post some pictures. It doesn't seem to happen too often. OTOH, it only needs to happen once to destroy anything. The Wheeling Island location certainly is a convenient place to live for work in Wheeling. Also, there are some very interesting bridges there. The flooding story, in conjunction with the bridges, might be an interesting TB post. Thanks.
Well, today is my last day online before I box up the computer tonight. The big move is tomorrow starting at 9:30 am. My mom and dad are coming up and we're going to try and get everything in one move. I called Verizon and got my current phone/DSL account transferred up there to wheeling, so I'll have phone service on tuesday but DSL won't activate until the 16th. I'll try and go to the public library once a day unless I can access trainboard for a few minutes at work. I have been in contact with a B&O modeler in the area, and hope to join his "round-robin" group of modelers this week. Well, I better go get back to packing. Looks like I won't get to take my layout with me, may not be enough room to transport it.
