The Whitcomb 65-tonner thread over on the Atlas board is coming slowly. These are the first test parts out of the mold. I've decided to try a frame with a corrected wheelbase to hold the Tomytec parts - which will make it way easier to do this. The short frames are next to impossible to find now and they also take a lot of hacking. This is a test shot on the prototype replacement frame as well.
Got my Fast Tracks # 12 turnout fixture kit a couple of weeks ago. Built the fifth one today and hope to install tomorrow. Have three lefthands installed so far and seem to work well. They are a little challenging to build but get easier as you go. Needed curved turnouts for the yard at Searsport!!
Hey John, Welcome back & the switches look good. Hey Randy, How about some pictures of your great layout? Hey Pete, I like the new pictures. Hey Flash, Great Scene. Now back to the sloppy game.
MEC_FAN: Great turnouts and No. 12 at that! When you put the turnouts in place, do you tweak them for gauge or position by adjusting the soldered ties slightly? The only time I have made turnouts (in a club), we had to do that. Also, what are the items above the jig in the first photograph? Thanks.
I've had an empty area on my current layout for well over a year now. Various things have been tentatively placed there, but I was never quite happy with them. The following pics are of the current idea, a freight dock for transfer from box car to truck. I've seen such, with no associated freight house, in several places in the Midwest, so I thought I'd build one.
I like that very much, Bookbear1. I haven't see a loading dock configured exactly like that before and I will try to make one for my layout. It looks like each one has a small ramp for the truck trailer to back up to the loading dock. Actually, it appears like the Verne Niner cork roadbed technique? Very nice job!
Thanks SW and Flash. Flash the orange gizmo is a rail roller used to put the curve into the rail, you can ajust it to the radius you need and the black thingamabob is the fixture for filing the frog points and point rails. You slide the rail in from either end depending on which peice your making. The way the parts fit in the fixture keeps it pretty much in gauge. Before I install them I put a 6" peice of track on all three ends and roll a car through them. Sometimes I have to do a little filing on points and gaurd rails if the clearance is off a bit. The radius is 20" thru track and 16" diverging track. Here's a link to Fastracks, if you got an hour and thriteen minutes to kill check out the video on how to do these. So easy a cave man could do it, well almost. MEC http://www.handlaidtrack.com/
