Thanks Scott. The firecracker antenna is 3/64" diameter brass tubing cut about 1/8" long with 0.010" brass wire glued in the tube with CA. The only place I've found tubing that small is at Hobby Haven in Des Moines, IA. K&S doesn't have any tubing that small.
Damn this thread makes me want to get off my arse and high-nose my SD45s. If only I could get the parts. YESSS!
These really are my babies. All are custom painted, with Micro-scale decals and wire handrails. Lead unit 5616 is pretty much the prima donna on the layout with constant lighting and strobe from Richmond Controls:
Randgust, your engines are beautiful, no doubt, but I find myself looking at your scenery more! Particularly your over pass in the first pic looks awesome, but the winner for me is that pickup with bullet holes. Love it. Edit: Your ballast looks great, too. What did you use?
The pickup truck was actually done by Verne Niner (Warbonnet fan). He had this on his layout, and since he was modeling the late 1940's, felt it was too new. He changed it to a 1920's truck and sent me this one, and it has an honored spot on the layout. The ballast is another one of those that if you don't tell them they'll never know. I've never had any luck with getting good profiles and no bubbles using "N Scale" material. It's all HO stuff. This is a mix of about five different Highball products colors with some iron ore thrown in there too; I got ballast samples from Flagstaff back in 1973 and matched the color to those samples.
First Attempt Been done many years now. The cab shades are now looking a bit dated so will replace with BLMA ones.
Stopped: Awaiting Sevicing This one has been done for a while. The trucks and handrails need a freshen up.
where do you get the detail parts for the engines? i need the hand rails for my IM SD40T-2 "snoot" SP bloody nose. i bought it online (eblah) oops ebay and the seller "forgot" to tell me one part of the handrail is missing. he did refund $5.00, which i thought was mighty nice of him.
the parts are available right in front of your door step mate... http://www.mark4design.com/html/n_cabs___short_hoods.html Mark 4 Design Ltd 393A Glenbrook Beach Road RD1 Waiuku 2681 New Zealand Mark Design: N & Z from NZ ph 09 2353 744 mark4design@gmail.com

Here's my contribution. I didn't do a lot of detailing on this unit, just painted and weathered it. Added a TCS split board decoder as well. Looks great on my Milw sprint train. Nate
