CAPS All prices go up, and EBay is the only market where you will get enough people bidding on an item to make it worth your while. If you use another site, you may as well give it away... Tony Burzio San Dego, CA
The fee increases are pretty significant. They are raising their final value fees to 8% up to $25, plus 5% of $25-$1000, plus 3% above $1000. Old rates were 5%, 2.75%, and 1.5% respectively. You wil now be paying $5.75 in final value fees on a $100 sale. This is $2.44 more than under the old rates.
Ouch!! My selling will be more closely controlled now.. [ 15. January 2005, 05:08: Message edited by: HemiAdda2d ]
Sam- The answer is NO. For those of us who are NOT eBay Stores, Business, or eBay Motors, there are just two increases. The "Buy It Now" fees. And the "10 day Auction," which is strictly an OPTION. The fees increasing as noted elsewhere in this thread only apply to eBay Stores, Businesses, and eBay Motors. Boxcab E50
Hemi- Don't worry. For the few hobby type items you sell, as long as you do not use the Buy-It-Now, or Ten Day Auction option, these fee changes won't touch your wallet. If you want, I can PM you with the entire text of the message they sent out to all sellers. Boxcab E50
yes the final value fees will change in a hobby where we sell and make 10-15 % profit doubling the fees over the $25.00 level will hurt
I have been purchasing some new rolling stock through E-bay through e-bay dealers, however with a increase in prices they may be higher than many web/mail order dealers when combined with shipping so I would say those ebay stores will be hurt depending more on the casual purchase over the hobbyist. As for rare or road specific items that are hard to come by from private parties I see little differance. I mean if I see 10 DI Gunderson woodchip gondolas in SOU on ebay, I'm bidding because to wait for DI to produce anything other than SP or GN I will be dead long before a eastern road is produced. Well, okay, then that puts me back on the seller list, what little I sell there anyway. I much prefer the TB forum for both buying and selling. Wonder if I can change my vote in the poll?
Only if you own an eBay Store, sell in the Business & Industrial category, or eBay Motors. Otherwise, the fees are NOT up for the individual sellers, except what I mentioned yesterday. This won't hurt hobby shops, unless they are registered as an eBay Store. Which they do not need to do to sell on eBay. If you are not selling as an eBay Store, then your fees should not go up. That would certainly be a way for Trainboard to support itself. They wouldn't have to charge as high a fee as E-bay and it would be a one stop shopping center for train-stuff. Maybe its something that the Admins could consider. It would probably be better received than "Bid-2-Own" or "Free-till-it-Sells" which are other hobby related auction sites.
Sounds good Joe but would be an administrators nightmare, we are happy to provide a free service. As Ken has stated it does not affect the individual buyer or seller just the big online auction stores as not many individual sellers us the "buy it now" option.
Thanks, Boxcab E50, I guess I didn't read the fine print well enough. I like buying using buy it now, and I usually sell with it, too. Not very often do I get the 'conservative' buy it now price however. Fickle market values.... What are ya really gonna do? (to quote a great railfan photographer, [Grumpy's World] Jim Gilley)
Not true - there are a lot of small eBay businesses out there, like mine, that use the Buy It Now feature frequently. The price hikes are going to drastically affect the prices I charge, and therefore the sales I am able to make. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of other options for selling online. It costs a lot of money to get people to visit your site, either by purchasing ads somewhere (like Train Board) or by selling at a lot of swap meets in the region. Guess I need to evaluate my options... Pat
