What is the slowest speed switcher that is readily avaible? If it dcc ready or dcc equiped, that would be a major plus. I'm going to putting the chassis in a box car. Thanks for any suggestions for a locomotive to start with.
I have a couple of Proto 2000 S1's that go nice and slow and steady...don't know scale speed but they operate nicely....
I'm with smallbore - P2k are usually good slow runners. I have a couple of Heritage steamers (one is the 0-8-0 switcher) and they actually come with a guaranteed minimum speed.
I have the P2K 0-6-0, and on DC, it could take about 5 seconds between each TIE...! Performance is not quite as good on DCC, but still respectible. I imagine that the internal workings of the diesels are similar. What is your project that requires a powered box car? Andrew
I have noticed on the p2k gp9 that I have is slow but wasn't sure how the switcher models are. It is so I can build a runaway box car that accelerates at really slow pace.
A P2K switcher SW600/9/900/1200 is about the slowest I have. In DC mode (ie without a chip fitted) you can get them to move so slowly that you have to go away and come back later to see the distance travelled, as you can't see any movement if you sit and watch it - a watched kettle never boils. Jon
The Atlas S2 I have is very slow, and doesn't even have that high a top speed. The Bachmann Spectrum 44-tonner is another slow runner overall, both at low and top speeds. I recommend both for switcher, but the 44-tonner would be too small for even an old-time boxcar.
Just a quick update. I went with the p2k sw8 locomotive. It runs nice and slow. I still have to finish up my decoder install. I went with a nce d13srp decoder. Thanks for the suggestions.
I'm happy to hear you're moving ahead with this project. We'd love to see pics as you go along, and when it's done.
