With the number of E8 models already available, I don't see an Atlas version as very likely.

As far as the preorder system, we are constantly tweaking it to get the best combination of sell through. We don't want to leave any sales on the table, but at the same time we don't want a warehouse full of inventory. There are many times we hear that people can't find a car or locomotive that was recently released, yet we have them in stock ready for a distributor to order. Popular items are generally reissued at some point in the future, with new road numbers.

For EL prototype info, there is an email group at erielack@lists.elhts.org
as well as an internet-based historical society http://www.elhts.org
along with the traditional historical society http://www.erielackhs.org/

    Paul,

I appreciate the feedback. Well we can only hope that someone comes out with an Erie Lackawanna E8 sometime in the future.

I guess everyone has heard the old adage of put your money where your mouth is. Well I may live to regret this but I just ordered the following locomotives: (I know none of them is an E8 but I can wait.)

    Atlas:

    Erie Lackawanna Alco RS-3, Rd # 1025
EL Torpedo Tube GP-7, rd #1405 - finally found one in stock! :teeth:
    Erie Lackawanna GP-35, rd #2552
    EL (Maroon/Gray/Yellow) TM #1857

Hopefully they run well. Most of the time with Atlas you do not have to worry. But, buying them site unseen, oh boy my heart rate is up. I do look forward to getting them though.

For those of you who have painted your own E8s was it difficult? I'm assuming you used the Microscale decal set 60-573 which would make this job much easier. I could see a problem aligning such a long decal. Do you cut it into smaller sections? It would be great to see a tutorial on this.

'Ditto' on the questions from Don. How difficult was it for application the decals and which ones specifically should we get?

Don: I have a tutorial on painting an undecorated engine that you might like to look at. I thought it was very informative and the processes might work for an EL E-8 as well. The thread is titled "How to paint a CB&Q GP30 in N scale". It is not precisely what we are looking for, but his engine does have similar stripes to an EL engine.

    Hey Paul,
    Welcome to TB.

    Hey Don & MR. X,
Paint the shell EL Gray & do the decals. You need 2 setss. 1 is the stripes & other is the numbers & letters. Its not that its hard, but keeping it straight is. Before I got sick, I got pretty good at them. I did about 10 of them. Also getting the nose right is the hardest. Make sure to finish them with Micro-sol & a damp paper towel.

    Hello,
Sorry I am late to this thread.
Here are a couple of EL E8s I painted a long while ago. The maroon stripe and nose were masked, decals would be easier.

Here is something for the end of the train.

VERY nice MCB! I love the end of your last car and Phoebe Snow logos. I run my 7 car E-L passenger trains with two PA1's (#857 & #859)on the front end and the Con-Cor observation on the tail end. Yours is more prototypical.

Hey I recognize that Tavern Lounge. Saw it in ELHS print. Nice job Mike.
That inspired me to do one, and I found some great parts to make it more prototypical. The Kato business car has the correct roof and the Con Cor Dome has the correct sides. However, the windows need to be changed and I'm stalled at that point. Lots of cutting and sanding. Anyone interested, I'll post a pic of my progress.
I have a question on the Tomar drumheads. Did you use the lights supplied with the kit?? How well do they illuminate? I thought about track powering LEDs or some other light source into the Kato chassis.
The problem would be if the bulb ever burns out I wouldn't be able to change or repair it.

    Thanks guys,

Pool guy, that car is from a Con-Cor 85' lightweight coach. The drum heads are Tomar.

X600,(like that handle) Yes, that is the car. I built it back in '95 I think, and it has been beating around N trak layouts ever since. The Tomar drumheads are unmodified. They are much more visible in the photo than in person. They are powered by crude axle wipers which add considerable drag to the train, but no problem, those E8s will pull a brick around the layout. I did not light the interior. Post pics of yours if you have them, I'm interested.

    Thanks,
    MCB

The engines that I ordered came today!!! I really hate to post this here since you guys will go buy the few that are left and I can not get another one right now. But since we are friends.

If you have not picked this engine up yet, you had better get it in a hurry - Atlas - Erie Lackawanna Alco RS-3. Two words ABSOLUTLY INCREDIBLE!!!

After just 30 seconds of owning it I have a sneaking suspicion that it will become my favorite engine of all time.

Any way excellent running and excellent slow speed. Looks great in my opinion.

Just thought I would share this - still not an E-8 though - but I am patient!

I have all three on preorder from Chuck at Feather River Train Shop. I am sure you will be able to find these for quite awhile since they are not decoder ready. I have an older EL RS3s that I plan on changing out the mechanism and then selling the older one on Ebay.

You are going to love them when you get them! I certainly hope you are right about them being around for a while. Quite few places are already sold out of them. Did you get my private message about the Trainmaster?

---And still no g/y/m caboose! Though I have about 37 EL g/y/m locos of 17 types.

I know it might be like comparing apples and oranges but Bachman did make a g/y/m silver series caboose part number 160-70778. I have never owned one myself...

Personally I would love to have a bay window caboose made in the g/y/m paint scheme.

I have wondered the same thing, thinking I missed something. I have been looking for these in Kato. What I know is this:

    1. Erie Lackawanna never ran an E8B unit. The last "B" units were F7's.
    2. Kato only produces engines that they offer or have offered in passenger car sets.

That said, the only E way to have an E.L. E8B unit is to create one yourself using paint and Micro-Scale decal sets or buy an undecorated or painted unit cheap and have someone paint & decal it for you.

All the E8A and fantasy B units (I am not a purist) that I have with Kato drives have been created this way.

I have however seen many E8A units sold on EBay made by Life Like.

    Hope this helps.

    Mike
