Say, to the folks who heard MT at Chantilly - what details were given about the Ortner car and any timing????
As I understand it: the Ortner car will have "interior details". When asked about a load, it was not known 'at this time'. Chuck Holthoff with the FEC Railway Society attended the show with S&R Models and offered the Society's full corperation on the FEC cars to Eric Smith of Micro-Trains. FECRS: http://www.fecrs.com/index.html M-T stated that there would be another new body style Before the Ortner, which is planned for late this fall.
I just saw the MT SP Ortners at the store yesterday and they are very impressive. I love the interior support details. Just wish MT would start doing multiple road numbers. Dave Los Angeles, CA -Rail Radio Online-Home of the "TrainTenna" RR Monitoring Antenna- http://eje.railfan.net/railradioonline
I think I will wait until the undec comes out and make a fleet. Wonder if it rides high on the trucks?
Dave: Based on info I received following Chantilly that is something we won't see anytime soon. NSN is offering Precise Overlay Decals in cooperation with MTL and Microscale. MTL is providing info on the correct font size and style as well as actual paint samples to NSN. This way you can have a fleet of up to 13 cars with as little as an additional $1 per car.
When are these decal sets going to be released? I'd love to have some sets of 13 for MT car types I have. Thanks
Jason was over tonight and brought his 3 SP otners with him, the look super impressive and ran flawlessly on the layout

I applaud NSN for doing this, and think it's a great idea, but I think the logistics of it need a lot of work. For starters, how many people actually purchased 13 of the Santa Fe autoracks? I bought two, and it's highly doubtful I would spend $12 to renumber the one that needs it. And I would guess it would be next to impossible to find them now, even if you did want 13. (there are currently none on eBay) I think at VERY least that NSN needs to announce their overlay in conjunction with the M-T announcements so that we can TRY to get a greater number of cars. I think they might have a little more success on some NON-MT cars, but that's just my opinion...I am glad to hear that M-T and Microscale are cooperating in this deal. That's a step in the right direction. Currently, we don't even know what they will look like on the models. Probably not an issue, but still an unknown. Anyway, like I said it's a great idea. I would purchase some Atlas UFIX Coalveyor or (insert mfg here) BN Bethgon overlays in a second.
FWIW, I was looking at the old MoPac line at the San Antonio airport today. A 75-80 car rock train went by; no pictures of course. But the rock train was made up of about 50 MT style Ortners and 25-30 other "regular" types of hoppers. Those others were the regular DRGW, MoPac, and other UP assimilateds. The Ortners were the MT type with the Espee spelled out on the side. Others did not have the large Espee. Some of the Ortners were Golden West Service. The ballast size rock loads are all bone white. Not sure if it is for the railroad or other commercial use. [ 04. December 2004, 00:42: Message edited by: sapacif ]
