Posted this on the "other" forum but thought I would share here and encourage others to post there work. This was the project this weekend. Custom painted B&O E9 with all the trimmin's. Still need to do liftrings, and front pilot and put the glazing back in...all work for tomorrow night. She's sittin' a hair high since its not locked into the frame. This was how 1457 looked in the very early sixties before getting the dreaded starburst paintscheme. Although my timeframe is about '68-'73...this is still a pretty PJ, so I'm taking some creative license Das Timmah
Das, Nice job, i always liked that scheme, as for me i'm in the process of tearing down my layout. I'm downsizing but my N scale layout will fit nicely into my next house. Dave
I'm visiting some friends in Colorado Springs so no model railroading or "official" railfanning. But I did do something quasi-train related during a hiking trip. My buddy and I ascended "The Incline", which is a "rails-to-trails" like you've never seen before! It is the former ROW of the Mt. Manitou Scenic Incline Railway. (from the Incline Club website, the Mt. Manitou Scenic is "a cable car that took people up the eastern face of Rocky Mountain to about 8,600' before shutting down in 1990. The steepest section is at a grade of 68% with the average grade just over 40%.") The ascent involves stepping up approximately 5000 crossties climbing 2,011 feet over 1.02 miles. Forutunately there's a crossing trail halfway that gives you an "out" and we opted for that in the interest of time and safety. I'm not in "college shape" and it was quite a challenge but do-able, and was a great hike and some beautiful views. I do intend to return to do the entire trail all the way to the top soon. I'll post a pic of the ROW once I get it uploaded.
That's one nice looking loco! This weekend was the second train show in a row at a local mall for our NTrak club -- 35 modules and lots of trains running. We had a great time, including a 275 car train pulled by 4 IM F3's with two more F3's in the middle. By the way, I've become a huge DCC fan, much to my surprise. We had three trains comfortably running on our "designated DCC" (red) line. Great fun!
OK, here's a couple from a bunch of digital pictures I shot over the weekend. I am very pleased with the results; now that I have figured out how to keep the Digital Rebel in f/32, I believe my photo skills have jumped from completely incompetent to solidly mediocre. These are of Otto Stock Farm Supplies, at Haselton on my Wilmington and New York Railway. This is a slightly modified "The Bartlett" kit from Showcase Miniatures. You might recall my posting questions about this kit a few months back. Yes, I like humorous names on my businesses.
Went down to Albany, GA to do some railfanning, and got lots of shots of the motive power on the Georgia & Florida RR. Think ex-CN widenosed GP40s, both in green and in clapped-out CN colors.....
A Visit To the San Diego Railway Museum I had a interseting time visiting and the key word here "Operating" one of Steve's older Rivarossi, U.P. Big Boys and mixed freight over the Goat Canyon Trestle, on the Carriso Gorge San Diego & Arizona Railway. We joined up by invitation with the Round House Gang, who has their own HO scale model railroad but no place to put it. I know it's HO, but this N Scaler had a great time. Here's some pictures. I tried to get into the N scale group operating trains on a separate layout however, no one appeared to be there. It was lunch time and they may have been taking a break. Oh well. The rumor mill has it that a computer runs everything therefore replacing us human types. Geez, I hope not! The first picture is the Big Guy pulling a freight, about to exit the El Centro Loop. The other three pictures are of the unit and mixed freight, crossing the Goat Canyon Trestle. Enjoy! We did...loads of fun and a great bunch of guys and gals to operate with.
I remember seeing 1457 back in the 1960's after the first re-paint pulling The Capitol Limited. It was painted solid blue with the large B&O emblem below the headlight. There was a yellow stripe along the bottom of the body and the pilot was also yellow. It had a 5-chime Nathan horn on top on the engineer's side. As far as I know, Sunrise Enterprises is the only source for a Nathan 5-chime horn - I have to pick up a few to put on my Precision Craft E8s. A 5-chime horn on the top would be a great addition to a really super paint job - it really looks good! Edit: One other thing I want to add to my E8s is the EMD builder's plate near the bottom of body just to right of the engineer's side ladder. Does anyone know if anyone makes a decal for this?
I began a somewhat futile attemp at re-orging my "workshop/garage".. If you look very closely you can see my layout up in the right-hand corner, behind the ladder As you can see, I achieved step 1: creating a complete mess!
All I did was disconnect my DCC system and reconnect my power pack, until I have more than one working decodered loco
I added a lower headlight to a Kato F3. I modified the chassis to hold an LED behind the new light and blanked out the upper light opening with a red MV lense to simulate an unlit emergency light. I made my own bezel and new lense for the lower light.
We took a road trip (about 4 hours each way) to my home town in NW Ohio to celebrate my mom's 80th birthday. While there I found out a bit about last years demolition of the wonderful old brick B&O depot there. Apparently the local historical society tried to buy the depot from CSX and were turned down. After repeated requests the depot burned under suspicious circumstances.
We went through the same agony with CSX back in 1997 when they demolished the two-story brick depot at Garrett, Indiana. Such great historic treasures that stood for over 100 years totally gone in a single day.
We took aroad trip up to Eugene Oregon to a model train show and swap meet. Got about $600+ of Micro-train cars for about $200.00.
Here's a BNSF SD90Mac from last weekend and a Santa Fe SD80Mac from this weekend. It's far from done but it's good enough for photos. I'll probably have to wait for next weekend to finish it. I'm trying to finish some of my BNSF Engines but I'm waiting for decals to come in so this was a play toy this weekend.
Nice looking photos. I really like the photos of those Rivarossi steamers Rick, even if they are HO. I ran trains on the layout a bit this weekend, but mostly worked on the house, went to the store, worked on the house, went for a walk, cut the grass and chopped the weeds... Anyway, you get the picture. And late Sunday read a model railroad book a friend brought over. Plan to run trains a bit a couple of evenings this week.
Had an operating session Saturday night on the Peoria and Pekin Union Railway in N-Scale. Jim and Tom Starbuck drove 2+ hours to participate (and take pictures, which I hope they'll post). I had about twice as many participants as expected and almost everyone was new to a large and complex layout (and Digitrax throttles), so people didn't get to run as many trains as I'd hoped. But I learned some lessons about running a smooth operating session and we'll try again...
