The NYC used to run these mallets down through the Grand Canyon of PA. I've recently acquired a Bachmann N scale unit and want to letter it for NYC. None of the photos I've been able to find show the tender lettering with clarity. I'll be modeling the early 50's era. Anyone know if the tender should say New York Central, New York Central System, or New York Central Lines? Thanks!
Further research shows the the service down the Canyon with these engines was probably discontinued sometime in the late 30's/early 40's. Looking at old photos of NYC steam it's not obvious when they used "Line" or "System" (or just NYC). Was there a specific time their nomenclature converted from one to the other?
lettering Bob,In 1936 they renumbered the engines to fit in the NYC numbering system. The Boston & Albany used NYC SYSTEM and a few other examples I can't name. But photos in NYC Power vol. 1 in the 50's NYC would be correct. LEW
Bob, sorry I missed this earlier. LEW's suggestion about Staufer's Steam Power is right. I looked through it and found a few shots of the 2-6-6-2's, and none have dates associated with them. They all show just "New York Central" on the tenders. One with the post-1936 sans serif big letters. Hope this helps. :confused2:
lettering You are correct. These lines included B&A,P&LE, P&E,CR&I,etc. These roads all operated as a seperate railroad but the officals interchanged with all the railroads in the NYC. When I hired out in 1950 I worked for the Big 4. All reference in the timetable was C.C.C.& Stl. Not NYC.If we crossed the NYC it did not say NYC-NYC it said B4-NYC.This was 20 yrs.after the NYC took over the B4 . This did not change until the PC merger. LEW
The Bachmann replacement was a Nickel Plate Road (original unit was unlettered), but I got the undecorated shell and tender back with the new loco. But before I do the NYC lettering, anyone know if the Nickel Plate ever "ran through" on the NYC? I know they linked up in Chicago, but haven't seen any indicators that they came further east.
