I'm going to chase the 844/4449 double header today from Winlock to Tacoma! I hear tell there should be oodles of people watching. I will post some photos tonight. Rob
"Don't drive like my brother" Drive safe and be smart about chasing a moving train. Looking forward to seeing the photos
They are going to stop and water them for a half hour. I will be able to get back ahead of it without driving crazy. It's also going to be in the area for a week or so....plenty of photo opps! Rob
Pix elsewhere show 4449 with a UP yellow patch below the cab with the UP number Y845. What a demotion. The Y signifies a yard engine. In reality it's Doyle and the gang's sense of humor. They also are running with SP number boards that read X844. Can't wait till next weekend when I will ride behind the two great steeds. :teeth:
Well after waiting for them for several hours and the weather turning Washington, it was worth the wait. Waited at Napavine, WA and she roared through at about 60. I'll post a couple now and more later. The diesel freights were while we waited. Rob
Ha ha... Looking at the plume, I'd say it was not all that warm. But I'd not have missed it! Far away... Boxcab E50
Hey, I got a few shots of it in Kalama, and just north of Castle Rock. I plan to go and see it in Chehalis on Tuesday when it's stopped.
Michael Christy got some really cool shots of the meet. Check out: http://www.trainboard.com/railimages/showgallery.php?cat=1517
Thanks for sharing your shots guys! I have one question though. Anyone else surprised to see the 4449 on the point? I have never seen the 844 trail in any of its excursions except when it had the tube failure and was towed home by the 3985. It surprises me the UP allow an SP on the point. Most of time we are fortunate to see something other than the 3985 or 844 on UP rails.
Trackage that the 844/4449 traveled on is jointly owned by the UP/BNSF and they did the movment with out a diesel helper!
I was surprised and wished that the 844 would have been on the point. Maybe it will be going back south or on the excursion runs to Everett.
I guessed that the double header would be the 844 pulling the usual UP equipment, with the 4449 added on the point. I don't know why, but I turned out right.
UP 1996 And to top it off UP moved the UP1996 up to Tacoma to be with 844 and 4449:shade: to do switcher duty! LOL
This is getting good. This morning when the UP crew arrived, they found the tender on 844 lettered "Southern Pacific." I am counting the hours until I get to ride behind this dynamic duo. :shade:
Well the Useless Pacific strikes again! According to their web sight, and everything they told me, they were going to use their own main line to Black River Jct then the BNSF to Everett. I spent 3 hrs searching for the right spot for photos, and $40.00 for gas, then after they were an hour late AGAIN, they used the BNSF track all the way back to Tacoma. So my question is....is their main line not good enough to support their engines? Or just easier to get to the AMTRAK depot which is on the BNSF main line. With as much trouble that Amtrak has on The Useless Pacific tracks, they should have told them no to using their depot. After the problem TOY train manufacturers had with copy right problems, they , the Useless Pacific executives should be ashamed!
I'm most impressed they let it run without diesel helpers. BNSF wouldn't let 3751 go from Fullerton to LA without a GEVO on point. Of course, it wasn't running and 3751 put up a nice smoke screen, but still. I have pictures that make it look like the Gevo had a blown turbo instead of great steam shots. Stupid BNSF.
