I would like to make a small portable layout of some Maine 24" logging/slate railroad. Is there anything in N scale that would match anything in the region? All the locos I have seen look like western prototypes.

That's because the models you're seeing are Nn3, not Nn2. (Actually, Nn3 uses Z track, which comes out closer to metre-gauge.) There is no Nn2 that I know of. It would require a gauge similar to that used for the very rare Zm (Z scale metre gauge; 4.5mm gauge).

Zm.... Unbelievable. Didn't even know it existed.

Something to look forward to for Chris though!

Z track scales to about 30", I can live with the extra 6". Maine engines are very unique thought. It seems none of them followed the western practive of immitating the full scale cousins. You see 0-4-4 engines without tanders, and other stranger rolling stock.

Has anyone ever tried to model a Maine 2 footer in N?

Dan there is a gentleman named Peters, I think, (can't remember his first name) back in the 80's who was making Nn3 stuff when there was nothing around. He also made a Nn2 Maine Forney. I don't recall wether it was powered, but it did exist! Maybe someone can jog their memory and come up with his name and maybe a photo of his stuff. He was from Southern california and had hurt his back and took up Nn3 as a hobby. His stuff was good for the time. It certainly seems like a perfect excuse for a powered boxcar or caboose to push something that small around. lv4142003

    Here is a HOn30 0-4-4 of mine:

Someday it will be Kennebec Central #2:

I don't have a HOn30 layout anymore or any other equipment, but I'm keeping this 0-4-4 just in case.

Man that's a beautiful engine. I posted a reply about a guy named Peters who did a Nn2 Forney. His name is George Peters and I remember he did a lot of Nn3 stuff way back when. He did a beautiful Uintah #50 and some D&RGW stuff. Anyone remember him or have photos of his stuff. lv4142003

Sounds like you're referring to George "Pete" Peters? Lived in California? He did all kind of great N stuff. Narrow gauge years ahead of many other people. I remember his work in NTRAK newsletters.

Sounds a lot like what On30, and HOn30 folks do. And it works very well. If somebody has done Maine 2 Foot in N, I'd love to see it!

Do check out that suggested web site. Also, what you've described, seems a lot like the Monson Railroad. There have been a couple of books done, which include it. Might be worth searching for that info.
