I think the depots in Newport, WA and Rathdrum, ID are still standing. The UP yard in Spokane is the old MILW yard. The UP yard was sold to a couple of big box retailers like Costco and Home Depot. I believe there is an old freight house in Ellensburg, not far from the Central Washington University campus. The depot in Kittitas looks real sharp since it was recently repainted. Then there is all the fun stuff in South Cle Elum.
Depots- Metaline Falls, WA? Cusick, WA? Ione, WA? Coeur d'Alene, ID? Fernwood, ID? Plummer (2nd), Bovill, and St. Maries, Idaho depots. Bridge at Tekoa, WA. Substation 27 (Renton), Wa. And more... Boxcab E50
Well Hemi, Looks like you have to fill the tank with gas and stock up on batteries, there is still more out there!!
Well, Andy, the one thing I dislike about my camera is the batteries. They are proprietary--against every bit of advice I've ever given, no less. They do have long life,a nd are relatively cheap to replace. Online vendors sell it for like 15 bucks. I have 2, so I always have a spare. If I make another large findings trip, it will be with my buddy Gary. My wife and I aren't planning any sort of trip till next year. After all, she's 7 mos pregnant. My next area of attack might be Harlo-Loweth, and possibly Garrison-Butte-Three Forks.
I spent $30 for gas today. Just to photo one stinking RR station. And it wasn't even Milw! Boxcab E50
Don't forget the whole line from Renton, Black River Jct. south, thru Kent,(the depot is restored and is a dentist office 2 blocks from the line),south Kent there is a big thru-truss bridge and trestle and right after that is the automobile reload, then thru Auburn,(which has a bussiness complex named after the Milwaukee!), on down to Sumner. North Puyallup has an old overpass with the shields for the electric line still attached under it. All the signals on the line are the originals that have been there forever, which UP still uses! Tacoma still has massive amounts of MILW stuff all over, including the bridge over the Puyallup River, past the Freight House, and up the steep gulch, all the way to Mineral. Many, many artifacts still around to find..... Go west, my son!! You will find MILW treasure!:teeth:
Cool! I lived there for most of my childhood from 1968 to 1981, when the family moved to Renton. I havn't been to Edmonds in quit a few years, anything different? Ya' got a pic?
YES!! From Tacoma south, you can follow the MILW all the way to Chehallis, with a lot of little things along the way! Bring a good map with backroads to match up with a Milwaukee Road map of the area. I've walked alot of these rails in the sticks, and I'm never dissapointed!:teeth:
This is the Morton branch? The line out of Tide Flats Yard that has such a steep hill that helpers are required? How far out of Portland is this? I don't have a clue!
The scene is a bit different from when I was last there. Building pretty much the same. Parking is a big headache. Photo. Yes. I am away from home. And computer access is limited. As is my ability to upload. Boxcab E50
Chehalis is where you can pick up the line north and it's 1 and 1/2 hours north from Portland. If you have a good afternoon, you can see most of the lines and remaining stuff.:teeth: Lots to see!! Chehalis & Centralia RR has a restored type "D" depot AND a restored 40' ribside boxcar, and other stuff. From there you head north, lots of trestles and chevron switch stands, Maytown has a type "D" depot and speeder shack, but in original condition, then at Pacific jct, where they keep the American Orient Express at the shops,(by the way, I think there is a Super Dome still down there!!), a couple other towns I can't remember, then on to the Frederickson "Y", you can either follow the line to Tacoma, or up to Morton, where the 2 story depot is restored. Tacoma Rail runs trains over alot of these lines, usually with a rebuilt SD45 and SD40 combo, and sometimes older rebuilt GP's. Plus much, much more trestles, bridges-both steel and wood, etc., etc.!! Grab a good map and a MILW map to scout out the lines.
