Dave, they are Alaska SD-70Mac's with the radiator flares from SD-80-90's. No the cab and carbody are not correct but close enough to make me happy. I removed the lettering with a powered eraser and 91% alcohol and touched up the yellow as needed with Pactra Basic yellow. The blue is a good match to C&O enchantment blue for the flares. BLMA sunsheilds, Atlas jumper line and custom mixed Polyscale for the chassis, (25 parts reefer white, 4 parts CSX gray) and Microscale decals for the SD-40-2's. It is not correct but as I said, It makes me happy. I took photos at Bowden yard before they were put in service with Hulcher washing the units. They are on Fallen Flags. The sill stripes are done in Scotchlite approx. 1/32" wide. Bob.

    almost right

    Bob,

They look very good, only problem is the FEC SD70M-2 has cab mounted headlights and not on the nose. Otherwise, they look darn good!

FEC's -2 seem to be the right engine if you want to start scratch building or kitbashing.

Does anyone know what color the red and yellow are on FEC # 2000? I would love to paint one.

Max, thanks for your comments. When I started on these about 10 months ago I bought 2 SD-80-90 shells from Kato for the flares. I tried every combination I could think of to use parts from these to make a more acceptable M-2 without success. The 70-Mac cab and carbody are not correct for what I modeled but had the "look" of what I wanted to do. As I said before I did not want to attempt the pin stripes which would have been required with a cab change. I enjoyed the project, wish I could have gotten closer to right. Bob.

    Bob,
having spoken to Max when we first saw your photos which I shared with attendees at the FEC convention, I can attest that while they are not prototypically accurate, we all believed them gorgeous custom jobs, you should be very proud of your work!

Having seen them in person - they really are Beautifully done... and make nice stand-ins .. until Kato releases the exact model - :)

Bob has some of the nicest FEC models I have seen. His ex-UP units have real scotchlite stripes !

I couldnt agree more! Nice work Bob! Scotchlite was a real prototypical edge! By the way, some like using Signal Red and Signal Yellow for the 2000,but I like using Santa Fe Red and Union Pacific Armour Yellow . The UP Yellow makes the white logo and lettering stand out better and looks close to the real thing for me.

Thanks for your comments guys. It was fun trying to make 100 and 101, costly but fun. Bob.

Great pics and awesome modeling. Hmmmmm... might have to re-think my BNSF layout and go with FEC. I do love palm trees and custom painting a few engines would be easy. Hmmmm... tempting... :)
