Hi all, While I'm waiting for the extension on my shed to be started I thought I'd make good use of the time and start my buildings. I've started painting some of them and have put a couple of pics up on my website:- Shaun's Model Railway Project under the section "Buildings" What do you reckon to what I've done so far?
Shaun- Welcome to Trainboard. We are all looking forward to seeing your progress on your first building.
Shaun, For painting brick. In the past here's what I've done. 1. Prime the parts if necessary. Let dry... 2. Paint the bricks - Let that dry. Let it cure as well. Because of the next step. 3. Using white (or whatever color) latex or acrylics work too I think. Swab the paint over the entire surface. Get a rag and wipe most of the white paint off. Mortar you want? Mortar you got. As a plus it weathers the brick a little too... Or you can buy some modelers mortar. That comes in various colors. I've got it in weathered white, white, and GREEN (of all things...What was I thinking? Between the cracks in sidewalks maybe?) Hope this helps...
Shaun: Welcome to Trainboard. Have fun with your buildings. That's one part of the hobby that I really enjoy. Stay cool and run steam.....
Hi all, The first model is finished. It's only a small 6-piece lineside hut kit but it's still an achievment for me! The pic of the finished model can be found at Shaun's Model Railway Project
A nice start... I DO like doing the buildings on a layout. And I envy you the 'garden shed' for the layout...which I had a dedicated space for mine! It would sure beat having to up-end it and puting it in the closet off and on. good luck with your surgery and enjoy your layout!
Stewart makes a loco washer, if I understand from your site you said you couldn't find anyone who did.
[Copied for ShaunMac from a duplicate thread by Pete Nolan]: I've just finished building an industrial unit for my layout project. I tried drybrushing the brickwork after having first sprayed on the mortar. I just can't seem to get the hang of doing the raised detail first and then filling the gaps afterwards no matter how much I practice the various techiques that I've had recommended to me. I've tried it the way I have as it's the only way I seem to be able to achieve anything half decent! I've put a pic up on my website to let me know what you think and be gentle - it is only the second model I've made in a while! The pic can be found at:- http://www.shaunsmodelrailway.net Cheers
Copied for Fothergill from a duplicate thread by Pete Nolan: One problem might be with the photography. I think you are using a flash which will make the mortar look like chalk used in school on a blackboard. I used a very thin wash of concrete or aged concrete colored paint to fill in the mortar, constantly wiping it off the surface of the brick with a sponge. I locked the other thread as it was a duplicate--Pete
Next 2 buildings are finished. That's not bad for me. Been in the hobby nearly 30 years and I've only ever managed to actually finish 2 models before. I've manged to get 5 done in the last 4 days alone! I'll be putting pics up on my website some time tonight or tomorrow morning. Shaun
Hi Bob, Cheers for the comments. I've now built another 3 building kits - that's 8 in a week for me now. I've now started scratch building my train washer. I'll be putting some pics up som etime tonight.
