Just poured the river friday night it's finally dry and no longer tacky. We used polyester resin and it's rippled surface is perfect for doing a slow moving river. The only downfall the stuff stinks like body filler but stronger.
Thanks, it's my very first water so I was worried about how the resin would work, but it's not my first time with the airbrush Within the next few days the wife and I are going to scenerize this piece and attach it to the next one so I can lay the track all the way to the edges. We'll post some more pics then.
Please do not stay in the room while the resin is curing, and no loger than you just have to while mixing and pouring! Do not eat, drink, nor smoke while in these fumes! Do not allow pets or children, (especially babies) to breathe any of these fumes! The fumes are highly toxic and can render you like I am, with respiratory difficulties! It coated my lungs inside, so breathing is as if through a baloon, quite difficult. Try to only work with a wind blowing from you toward the resin and outside a window, to carry the particulate micro-dropplets away from you! Or work outside. Just be safe, and enjoy your trains.
wow thanks watash for the heads up for wen we put the water in is that the same for the scalecoat paints because they have a terrible odor that i open the windows to try and wentalate the air seems to get thinner and better i like the 3-way switch there
Your work looks great! Good color on the water as well. With regard to the toxicity, Watash's warning, etc... has anyone tried the "non toxic" Woodland Scenics water? I have a place to do a small stream/river and have been looking at various media for water. I was curious about how satisfied folks are w/ the Woodland Scenics "EZ Water". rkcarguy; Looking forward to more shots of the module!
Try Magic Water out of Coloma, MI. I have been to a few shows where the owner demos the product and the claims he has for low odor/non-toxic are correct. At least I haven't noticed a pile of bodies next to his table, and he's been at several shows. It is one of the better looking products on the market. -Mark
I've not used Woodland Scenic's two water products, but I did see them demoed and they looked good. I think, for me it would come down to cost/amount of water needed. I can set up fans and evacuate the garage for a day if it means saving substantial money.
How thick is that pour and what did you use to seal the bottom of the water area? Looks really great. I have some left over polyester from a teardrop trailer I built and thought about using it for a pond. Thanks for the post.
I got this matte medium from Micheals(craft store). I sealed over the plaster and plywood, airburshed the colors, and sealed again. I let it dry about 3-4 days before I poured the resin. It's fairly thick, we had to use the sides of paint sticks to spread it out you just have to get it touching everywhere you want it and it will level itself for the most part. The only tow things I would do different is use a little more catalyst I used 6 drops per ounce maybe should have been around 8-9, it dried a little slow, and use something else on the edges instead of tape. The resin "crawled" way up the tape and then separated pulling back from the edge of the layout a little. My next one I will probably spring for some some of that plastic cutting board material and screw it to the edge of the layout. The pour is only about 1/8" thick just a single pour. We were well aware of the dangerous smells, I have Kalmbach's scenery book and it warned us about this stuff. We opened the window and wore masks then got the hell outta there as soon as we had it spread out to our liking. That's the real drawback, it reeks and needs heat to cure right. I put a space heater in the roomset at 90 degrees, opened the wndow and stuffed a towel under the door between the room and the rest of the house.
More pics It's come to my attention my old HP digital camera is a big pos. For some reason there is no yellow hue in any of my photo's and they look like crap. Anyway heres the two modules connected.
Water The water on my layout is EnviroTex Lite. It is an epoxy resin stuff. I didn't notice any fumes as it hardened. The lift out for the doorway is a piece of 2X6 and is sceniced to look like a river. The bridges are Atlas Plate Girder bridges.
I did the river on my layout with EZ water and am very pleased with the results, see the image below. NYW&B
I was eyeing that woodland scenics water but after reading up on it I decided to go with the polyester resin for it's rippled surface. We're going to have a small lake on another part that I am going to pour with the envirotex. My wife and I are going to cruise nature and see if we can find some cladina lichen and preserve it, otherwise we'll need a 2nd mortgage to get the bushes and trees I want to finish the layout. I think it's kinda naked.
I see a problem, rkcar- just how do I get my raft (and more importantly, my extra wide load) down those cliffs? The river looks perfect for a lazy day of laid back rafting! I sure hope it feeds into NYW&B's. That fall folliage looks pretty inviting.
