I'm in a similar situation. I plan on a around the basement layout, going through a media/theatre room, kids/hobby room, gym, craft/laundry room and the utility room. Scott, you have a great layout. Enjoyed the article in the magazine. Joe
I finally uploaded a track plan, sory for the poor quality, I haven't had time to do it on the computer yet. There will be 2 subdivions, with a crew chang point at the main yard. The Mountain Sub and the Foothills Sub. Interestingly, I haven't actually started the Mountain Sub yet! I wanted a grain elevator, and having 2 subs will let me get away with still having mountain scenery. It will be about 100 feet from the main yard in each direction to the start of the staging yard. The staging yard will be one yard, with the mountain sub staging at the front, and the foothills sub staging at the back. You will have the option of running right through if continues running is needed.
One hundred feet from the staging yard? And then another hundred the other way? That does it, I'm moving out of this 9.5x10 room (total 95sqft) into one of these palatial basements you American folks show off. Of course, it'd never work around here - the water table is all of about 5 feet below me! So if I understand your plan and space correctly, the main breakers and electrical panel is top-left, between SD6#! (or Siding #1) and the staging. Definitely think a torch is a good idea so that you don't bump into layout while trying to find the breakers in the dark! I think the plan looks fine on paper. Keep us posted as she progresses!
That's right, the electrical pannel is on the top left, however, since it is just before the staging yard, it won't be really finished. And I did manage to find a lantern at work to put there in case of a power outage...
I finished laying the track in the one of the grain elevators. There are 3 tracks, each will hold 12 grain cars. It's all wired and everything works with out any derailments.CP9524 is just about finished spoting the empties, I got some pictures this morning. There will be another smaller grain elevator just west of here that will hold about 12 cars. Durring an op session, there will be a road switcher that will pull all 48 grain cars, and take them back to the main yard where they will go west. If time permits, the same crew may spot another 48 from the yard back to the elevators. It should make for an interesting switcher assignment.
Most of the track for the staging yard got installed today. There are 11 tracks, 6 of them are tied in on both ends, the longest tracks will hold 65 cars, the shortest ones, 48 cars. I'm going to try to finish the rest of them tomorrow and install feeders. I had to put a few more trains on the layout, just to test the staging yard switches out! Here is the West end of the staging yard... And the East end...
Looks Great Mike, as usual!! This looks to be an even bigger adventure than the old layout! I can't wait to see more. Mike
Fifer, I've tried to make the layout itself wider, to give me more room for industries and scenery, and made all the asiles 4 feet wide, to try and avoid bottle necks durring op sessions. HemiAdda2d, Just let me know when you guys want to come up for a visit!
I can see how those could have been a problem before. I hope you enjoy this one as much as we enjoyed seeing the last one take shape. Mike
Very nice, Mike! No Spiral Tunnels this time around? Oh well, here's a few shots from the old Spiral Tunnels on the Laggan Sub: Some foreign power doing extreme-cold weather operation test on the Laggan Sub: Exiting the upper spiral, about to enter the Lower Spiral: Exiting the lower Spiral: Thanks for the memories, Mike!
Ah, the old Spiral Tunnels! I wish I had finished them. Thanks for the old pictures! There sure was lots of power on that IMS train.
Here is the first part of the Mountain Sub, up until now, I've been working on the Foothills Sub. This is west of the main yard, there will be 3 tracks with some industries on each side of the main. I also finished another section in the main yard. There is now 2 seperate yards each with 5 tracks, and a mianline at the left. I put a few more trains on the layout, and of course ran them, just to check the track out!
Sing along with me... We're on a road to nowhere Come on inside Takin' that ride to nowhere Well take that ride -- Talking Heads, Road to Nowhere Very impressive. That there is about as much track as my entire layout! How are you going to throw the switches on the ladders? Manually, with a scale mile walk between each ladder?
