Like most n00bs I'm trolling eBay in search of a) bargains b) trains I've never seen before c) good-looking specimens.

There is an auction going on right now for some Marklin passenger cars - alas, there is no part number, so I can't tell if these are from a broken set or if they are individually available.

    The auction is here.

The seller appears to be offering three other cars that look similar.

Can any of you tell me more about this car, and for Bonus Points, what loco would have pulled them in the prototype?

Thanks and have a great evening,

    bob

(The snow is howling outside tonight - we dropped from nearly 50 degrees and balmy in the Loop today to a few scant degrees above zero, 50 mph gusts and driven snow that is falling horizontally:tb-ooh:.)

These were three axle passenger coaches rebuilt from older Prussian three axle cars. They are called "Thunder Boxes" because they were loud! They were used in branch line service throughout Germany around the 1950's or so. So smaller steams or deisels, and maybe an electric would have hauled these cars around.

They were never together as a set. They are Marklin Ref:

    8707 - Coach Type B3yge of the DB - 2nd Class
    8708 - Car Type BD3yge of the DB - 2nd Class

DB, Welcome to Trainboard. You are just what need in Trainboard. We need modelers who model European trains in z.

dbarnblatt - thank you for the quick reply - I'm kind of fond of the look of these cars; I can only imagine the sound they made.

When I lived in France growing up the old SNCF passenger cars were still in service, and they were so loud and rough-riding that you felt your fillings were always at risk of leaving your head.

I'm also glad to see other European z-modelers on the board, as this is an area of interest for me too.

I've been lurking for a while. As a proud card carrying member of the Zo-Cal Module group I have learned a lot about NA prototypes... particularly California. But I love European trains because of the charm they have. And when my dad bought a Marklin HO set when I was a kid... thats really all I know.

Lets keep the European threads going!

    Hello Bob & Dave,

I started my Zescapades in the zmall world in the early 90zzzz. I purchazed anyzing that waz pazzenger orented then freight carz. A few yearz ago I decided to specialize in SBB CFF and BLS so in the future I will be parting with my DB rolling stock.
However, I do have the Marklin ALASKA RR set with 2 FR grainers and waiting for 2 FR ALASKA coal hoppers. Additionally, I have been collecting MTL freight cars from Eastern RRz in the 1940-50 time frame, before all the mergers.

I too am part of that Zo Cal group.
