Must be springtime - I've got an urge to clean house - or at least the roundhouse. I'm considering selling my brass - 2 Orntl Ltd/Samh SP 2-8-0s and a Key/Samh SP 2-8-2. Trouble is, I have no idea how to value them. Since they're iimmaculate - and could fund some nice replacements - I don't want to give them away. Anyone know how to valuate N-scale brass? I can't find a 'blue book,' but there must be some pricing tools. I'll appreciate your ideas. Scott
I would say start with Pete's suggestion and go from there. I've seen the 2 8 0 go for 400 dollars, sometimes more, sometimes less. Pennsy and SP generally get good prices. Rob
What tenders are on the 2-8-0's. The camelbacks listed last month on ebay went for over 500. The standard tender went for about 400. A 2-8-2 last week went for about 450. Caboose hobbies in Denver might be worth a call. See what they would value them at. Like Rob said, SP sells pretty well on ebay.
I agree, the $300-$500 range is about what to expect, depending on the bidders and how bad they want it.
About $20 a peice. Let me know where to send the check, hahha.. Seriously, they retial for over $700, however, you will never get retail. I had the SP GS4 by brass, that sold on Ebay several months ago for almost $600. And another brass loco that sold for $500. The estimates mentioned above are pretty good ballparks. I did the same thing, sold them, because altho nice, aren't worth that much to me, so I used the money to fund other projects. Summer ebay prices are generally lower, simply because model railroading tends to be a seasonal thing, more promidantly winter hobby. However, brass collectors browse ebay all the time, and more so in the summer because they know the listings aren't as flooded. So, you should do pretty good with them now, if you go the ebay route. However I would try and find a private sale on the forums 1st.
Good Evening. Last week on ebay closed a significant number of SP brass steam. I believe the pieces you described were sold. BTW brass have become significantly devalued versus a few years back Lots of luck Jerry
Not from what I see in the way of current auctions and sales at the usual Brass houses like The Caboose. N Scale brass prices for steamers are steady. Dave
Ha! I was thinking the same thing. Heck, I'd even go $50 LOL. Seriously though, I don't see you having any problems getting rid of them. I might send you a PM for the 2-8-2. Good luck.
Rob, Oriental Limited put out some 2-8-0's with camelback tenders. Quite nice models visualy, although the valve gear is somewhat under-detailed. Not sure how well they run. The sp brass that sold last week went for quite a bit more than I would have expected since the vast majority were cab forwards. I would have expected lower prices with the Intermountain announcement. I did see that the 4-10-2 went for about 50 over the price that Nscalesupply is asking and they still have them in stock.
The 2-8-0 has a defect that is easy to fix. During painting, some overspray on the tender causes the metal trucks (electrical pickup) to be insulated from the bottom of the tender shell. Take a small file and clear any paint where the truck touches and it'll run like a Swiss watch...
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction(s)! I appreciate your advice - all of you. My wife says you can make out the $60 check to her. I'm not too into e-bay, but I'll study last week's sales for a start. I'll also contact Caboose Hobbies. Timing isn't important to me - I haven't decided, yet, to sell these guys. Thank you! Scott
My suggestion would be to check with Uncle Dave's Brass Model Trains. He does quite a bit of Brass train selling on Ebay and also he is one of the Licensed distributors of Overland Models. So he would have a good knowledge base that he might pass along. emai: info@uncledavesbrass.com voice: 973-471-3227 Hoop there it is:tb-biggrin:
I'll second Uncle Dave's Brass. I've purchased quite a few brass OMI passenger cars from him in the past. He should be able to give you a quote over email and then can also consign it if you want to go that route. From what I understand he has a very large group to pull from. http://www.uncledavesbrass.com/brass.html There's also BPL Brassworks out of Washington. http://www.railmodel.com/default.asp Good luck.
