Although your prototype is UP, where I totally agree with the responses here, I will add that on CSX and NS, single unit lashups are a lot more common today than they used to be. Remember the name of the game today is FUEL consumption!

On CSX Sand Patch, it's common to see a single unit hauling an intermodal train.

Just last week on the NS Lehigh Line, a 100+ empty ethanol train had a single C40-9W in the lead - westbound - up the mountain from NJ to PA.

BTW, railroaders here call these trains "one unit wonders"...

This is something you would never see even in late Conrail days, though they did try single SD80MAC's on some intermodals.

I see quite regularly CP Trains in the Montreal area hauling intermodals or autoracks and even CN sometimes hauling mixed freight through Valleyfield with one locomotive. In the eighties and early nineties when I lived in Dorion, we would very often see CP Rail running single engines ... CN would run it's GE's single also ... but that was much rarer

Around here, the only time I really see a single loco on a train is when it's hauling empty intermodal cars.

Not quite. The old Canadian safety cab was introduced, IIRC, in 1973, used on CN's power from both EMD and MLW. Starting in 1990, some GEs also got it. However, at the end of the 80s, both EMD and GE had introduced their own widenose safety cabs. The Canadian safety cab is no longer being made. It can be distinguished by having 4 front windows.
