Just wondering if anyone out there is going to kitbash a Amtrak SDP-40F from the new F/FP45s? I am currently working on two, which are turning out pretty good. I am only going to rework the front and back platforms. I do not have the skills to redo the details on the cowl. Anyway, just thought I would see if anyone else out there was thinking what I was thinking. I'll post pictures latter.

I've got a rapid-prototyped shell for a SDP40F coming to me one of these days....

Sounds good, please post when you're taking orders and the shell is available for sale. I'm in for at least 1.
    Thanks,

Hmmm, SDP40F needs HT-C trucks. Too bad Athearn doesn't sell shells. :(

Can you tell us a little bit more about this? Is Rapid-Prototyped the company?

Rapid prototyping is a process, not a company. Rapid prototyping machines can be thought of as '3d printers'. Typically they 'print' many thin layers of a material (specialized plastic) to build up a three-dimensional object. They are usually used for creating prototypes for testing the design of a product, before moving to a different process (such as injection molding) for mass production.

How much did this cost you, and any recommendations? There was an artical a year or so ago in N Scale magazine, where a guy Rapid prototyped replicas of actual bridges on his Feather River layout.

"IM SD40T-2 frame and trucks should be right on"

Why go through the added expense of getting a frame and trucks when truck sideframes would be all that are needed... changing the sideframes that come with the model.

So are you also going to move the fans forward? That will give you a mostly correct look, you might want to look at rearranging some of the side panels with very thin styrene strips and file them down to match the Athearn molding.
I've made an ATSF version and am currently making a BNSF version, but it's not an athearn based one and it has the correct trucks.

Rob tell him to hurry up, I'm on my second version already mate!!! but i'd like a few of those with that fine detail eh

I'm not going to do much besides the platorms. I did however blank out incorrect doors. I do not posses the skills yet to mess around that much with an expensive locomotive, let a lone two!

I know this is an old thread, but I finished my SDP40F project and thought y'all might be interested in seeing the results. It's not 100% accurate, but good enough for now

Very nice, looks great. I am also an Amtrack fan so what you did does it for me. Keep it up.

I didn't take pictures during the process, but I have some more detailed shots. I basically rebuilt the front platform, modified the rear and blanked some doors/windows on the side, all with styren. Here are the pictures:
