    Electric Substation

Were you interested in a model or the prototype, railroad substation or non-railroad substation? Tomix has a model and while many prototypes exist, I've attached my photo of the one just north of Harmon yard in Metro-North territory on what was the old NY Central mainline.

I have that model. Not a bad kit to build. That is a good price.

    Yup...
I want to make a 'main power station'...and have it feed a 'substation' on the outskirts of town...then string lines from it to everything in town....and beyond.

Now to bring the high voltage in, you will need some kind of electrical towers. Several manf's make them depending on the style you like.

    TrainCat,

the electrical hardware would be a great edition to your line of etched kits. The one's currently out there are "clunky" to say the least, I'm sure you can do a much better job of it.

Bob has already two different styles of Electrical Transmission Towers in his product line, check under "Structures" on his webpage.
And yes, the details and cross sections are very fine and accurate, these are great looking models.

    Cheers

I was going to reply a while ago to this subject, but I could not find my Sub-Station kit. I was doing som eclean up the other day in my Office and found it in a box under a stack of magazines. Its a Con-Cor kit, "Cambria City Electric Sub-Station" kit number 960, below is a scan of the front of the box.

Myself I looking to built a Power plant Complex with three of the Con-Cor Nuclear power plants, this sub-station, and some other kits I'll be tossing it to the mix to fill space. I also have the North Power & Light kit some place in my collection of unbuilt kits, and I have two of those Tomix sub-stations coming as well.

Then there will have to be a few tracks in and around the power plant for my Nuclear trains to be spotted on.....

I opened up the box and it is a KIT! lots of little parts and some wire too. I got mine off ebay a while back, I also got two sets of the Kato/Heljan Power Towers (Pylons). I jost put one together and it looks kinda small 5" to the the lower cross arm, and 7.75" to the top. So it's about 66 scale feet to the lower cross arm and about 103.33333333' feet tall.

Oh man, do I want one of those substations! Do you think they may be available again?

I visited my nephew last week who works for Westinghouse and he showed me the new nuclear power plants that are being built today. They look like they would be easy to scratch build for the modern layouts. Unfortunately I don’t have the room or I would build one. I can however squeeze in a substation.

So for the people who have modern layouts Click on this; Westinghouse Nuclear Power

    Northern Light & Power

I have been putting my Northern Light & Power building togethere today, still working on it, just letting some of the glue dry. anyway I got to thinking of a power house I took two photos of, it in Evanston Wyoming and it belonged to the Union Pacific Railroad. It was used to provide electric power to the Round House and repair complex that was in Evanston. The round house is under restoration now, and the back shops ahve been done. The power house is now empty but would also be a neat building restored.

Photos below. The power house is not the same as the Northern Light & Power but its the same style, so maybe is your running a large engine repair shop & round house on your layout, you mite want one of these power houses some place in the complex too.
