I have purchased a couple of Mantua Camelback Mikes, and neither have valve gear. Other than the obvious of robbing gear off of another, perhaps older Mike, is there a company that makes valve gear that will work? Perhaps retro-fit Bowser gear? Also, I've been buying up old USRA Mantua Mikes. Some have it, some don't. Will the above conversion also work on them? I seem to remember seeing in the Walthers catalog years ago valve gear by someone that was either made for, or would fit the Mantua locomotives. Thanks in advance guys.
I'm afraid such a conversion isn't as simple as just swapping valve gear. The chasis of the Mike and the 2-8-2 camelback are totally different and the latter lacks the valve gear hangers present on the Mantua Mike's frame. Likewise, the steam chest is totally different and would have to be replaced on the camelback. Would it fit the frame saddle? I'm not even sure the wheel-spacing is exactly the same between the two. Same goes for the Mantua camelback Pacific and Atlantic. Yardbird does make a set of Walscherts valve gear for the Mike that includes a valve gear hanger but I have no idea if it will actually work/fit on the camelbacks. NYW&B
Thanks. I just sent him an email asking that question. When I find the answer, or actually do the conversion, I'll post the information for others.
