I cannot seem to find information on this anywhere. If I put my Kato Daylight passenger consist on a DCC track, will it blow out the lights in the observation car? I can't believe I haven't been able to find out from Kato or anyone else whether the lights are somehow DCC compatible as is, or whether I have to somehow rectify the current first.
Mine has run on DCC with no problem. But I have read here or on the Atlas forum about problems. Good luck with a search. But here is one http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?t=106116&highlight=daylight+observation And another http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?t=105636 Ben
I don't have the daylight, but do have the superchief observation car (however, now lettered Rock Island), and have been running it on a DCC track, and it does just fine. Lights work fine with no issues at all.
Kato warns that their regular incandescent lighting for their passenger cars runs the risk of burning out and/or melting the plastic in the cars if it receives over 12 volts. Many DCC systems put out 14 volts or more. Their LED lighting kits work fine at the higher voltages. But, with my NCE 5 amp Power Pro I adjusted the output voltage to 11.9 Volts and all as well (ie I am not retrofitting my passenger car sets with LED light kits which are expensive and all the trains including 3 and 4 engine consists run great).
One of the reference postings was mine. The "incident" happened with straight DC. I assume that the problem was due to faulty parts, but not due to high voltage (that's not more than an assumption!!). If you are in doubt, perhaps you could send a mail to Kato's customer service and ask them?
