Scott, Those turned out really nice. How did you do the torch marks? Mine are still sitting in the corner by themselves waiting patiently... I spent the weekend working on some FEC SD40-2 units and painting some requested fubies (including some NS stuff). Brian
I used a black wash over the whole car then rubbed off the excess. I used the dry brush tech for the torch marks. I first used black with about all the paint off the brush to give the outter part of the burn. Then I used rust and dapped it into the middle of the black spots. With a clean brush I rubbed the rust color into the black carful not covering up the outter part of the black color. Then in the center of the burn spot I rubbed until the color of the gray showed through. There you have it. Polly S paints for the job. Scott
Cool. I'll have to give that a try. I'm still learning the fine art of weathering freight cars. Thanks, Brian
Do I feel stupid! :tb-embarrassed: I always thought the marks of the cars were caused by spontaneous combustion of the coal dust and there had been a fire within the car. When driving past the piles (mountains) of coal at the blending area in Grand Rivers, KY, there always are areas with smoke coming out of the piles and sometime flames can be seen. That reinforced my thought of the 'in the car fires'. Thanks for the education. Gary
