[edit] I copied this thread to the inspection Pit as these photos are great for modelers of that time period.

I have recently become a member of "Railcar Photos" and noticed the Jim Gavin Photos on that website. He always posts freight cars around the 1971-1975 time frame. The photos are usually taken on a bridge in New Jersey. I think it must have been a great railfanning spot in those days. Here is a link to his latest freight car photo, a Missouri Illinois boxcar. You may have to join the website to search the photos. I think the Jim Gavin pictures would be well worth the time. (Membership is free.)

    Missouri Illinois boxcar.

Jim also has a lot of good photos from the same time period on Loco Photos, a companion website.

I see a lot of his great photos on "railcarphotos.com" and "locophotos.com". They are mostly from the 70's. This is an era I am very interested in. "Railcar" is mostly current BNSF and UP stuff so his "eastern roads" photos are very welcome. Does anybody know of additional sites where he posts?

I felt foolish for posting this as I didn't know but that Jim Gavin was a famous railroad photographer that I had never heard about. I'm glad someone else has noticed his work.

I sent him a message on Railcar Photos and he responded with more information on the exact location of his old railfanning spot. IIRC, he said that he took the pictures before and after work as this place was near by. What a great place to have a for snacks and watch the trains slowly roll by! The location is near the entrance to a yard throat?
