Rod Stewart reciently had his MRR with skyscrapers in MRR magizine. I have seen forums that are dedicated to tall buildings such as skyscrapers. With views of skyscrapers like any major downtown cities like New York or London. These forms are strictly for urban buildings and model trains are not a subject for discussion within these forum. But some of these forums are on Model Railroad sites. .This sometime hard for me to understand. I’m wondering how others might feel. So I’m adding a poll to see how members might vote to allow such a non model train forum on a model train site. See ya Ron
Ron, I understand where you are coming from, but our model railroads encompass alot of different things that are not directly related to track/trains. Some of us want to have large model skyscrapers on our layout. But why would a die hard skyscraper modeler want trains around his/her buildings? So I can see why they only stick to talking about their buildings. -Mike
Insofar as a skyscraper is a structure among other structures on a layout, it should be discussed in the context of any other structure as long as it pertains to the model railroad layout itself. But from there to go to just discussing the buildings, only the buildings, and nothing but the buildings, might as well include an aircraft-only forum, a boat-only forum, a bridge-only forum, a stop-sign-only forum, and a Robertson-screw-only forum...:eh-skeptical: We're in it for the trains. Skyscrapers and other structures are part of the scenery, and we use scenery to make the trains look better.
I voted undecided because like mentioned above, we're mostly in it for the trains. However, structures (skyscrapers included) can be a major aspect of model railroading, so I don't think the discussion of such should be completely eliminated from the site. I think a good alternative is to utilize either the inspection pit or the scale specific forums. Or if you want to be more specific, you could always create a Trainboard Group.
I vote undecided ! If you allow a non-modelrailroad forum, why should it be for skyscrapers only! It'd be more interesant for everyone to have a senic/building forum instead (then you could have a skyscraper thread). have a nice sunday everyone!
Or forums for just Shay Locomotives, Ma Hubbards,... I personally would not support the idea. I feel a site such as this one can become quite fractionated by divisions until only one or two people might post regularly to the praticular niche.
This has come up in respect of requests for specialist RR sections within TrainBoard. The effort of providing and moderating a section that only gets a couple of posts a month is not worth it. From the OP's post there are obviously some specialist skyscraper forums already, so that demand has been met by others and presumably the places they live in feel they are appropriate. The poll question is generic, and as such not very meaningful since any forum operator can allow whatever THEY think is appropriate, but I don't think TB should host one, so I vote No.
As suggested, why not create a group for it? Remember, the creation of specialist discussion groups is now in the hands of members.
I voted 'no' but maybe a forum dedicated specifically to any kind of structure building would be worthwhile....
I voted YES, because why should I DICTATE NO to those that are interested, just because I am not interested in tall structures... Probably not enough interest to justify moderating such a forum though.
I voted no. Honestly, what would be the point? As someone else said, they are a scenery item, and as such should be discussed in the proper section. Having a section simply for skyscrapers seems like a waste of space. And in reality, how much participation would it even have?
Structures Forum. Instead of a skyscraper only forum we could have an all scales inclusive structure forum.
I agree. Being new here, I didn't even realize there isn't a section to talk about structures and scenery. I think those are essential elements in a layout, so they should have their own section.
I'm with ya on this. When I first signed up, I thought it was odd not to have a scenery and structures section on here. What I was told is that this stuff would be discussed in the "inspection pit". Which kinda sucks, since you have alot of other stuff tossed in there too. I think it would be nice to browse a scenery or structures section looking for techniques. -Mike
Then form a Scenery and Structures Group on TB. That would be interesting. The Group would be limited to scenery and structures.
Couple of thoughts on the skyscraper forum: 1 What does Trainboard, or those who say no, lose? 2 What is so threatening about the concept? There are forums about G, S, O, HO, N, Z, there are forums about different roads, all are seperate, and pose no problems. Yet we all learn something from each forum if so desired. I wonder if all members only had GP9's, do they all have to be a certain color or road name? Just my thoughts.
1. nothing 2. nothing But the fact that there is no forum for buildings in general, seems to make a certain type of building having it's own forum kind of like putting the chicken before the egg.
I was thinking of doing that, but these 2 things are so pertinent to model railroading that is seems obvious to have them as front page items. The groups is more for modeling niches, and there doesn't seem to be alot of members going to the groups anyhow. Maybe this should be brought up to our hosts for a possible addition to TB. -Mike
