They certainly are a nice set of Heritage units. I know someone who'll really appreciate the D&H (where are you Darren?)

Culling out my motive power I came up with one E-7 that was surplus. Already have three, one in GN EB colors, one in SP&S four stripe scheme, and one more painted in Burlington Silver. Plus I have a 5th E-7 as a parts donor. So I decided that since the short International passenger consist was in BSB I would do the extra E-7 in that same scheme. Totally fantasy since there never were any in that paint. I had to modify some BN stripes for the nose and used the passenger BSB stripes for the sides. Still have to come up with some door kick plate decals and then time to start putting it back together.

From the workbench to the test track. Since neither of the Es had been run for awhile after finishing up work on them I lubed them a set up the test track for about a hours worth of running to work in the new lube and check for any kinks. Also ran my homemade track cleaning car along with them to clean the track while at it. About 20 minutes into I detected that hot motor smell and broke out my thermal tester that just allows one to point at something and get a reading. Discovered my track cleaner to be running hot at around 128 F. Now plastic gets iffy at about 140F. so I pulled it off the track for some cooling and then a little lube. Watching the lead BSB as it is running at a little over 108F as compared to the trailing unit running at 101F. And of course anytime I do this I have an audience with the Colonel John S. Mosby in rapt attention while Deekus the Cat says ho hum and lays in her bed.

The middle loop is 9.75M while the outer is 11 inch and the innermost is 8 inch.

Some CPR modelling of sorts for me this week. My three 2200 series coaches for the Provincial Museum train are now painted and ready for decals, and the next step was to cut out all the window panes (24 per coach). I started with .005" clear styrene but it was not thick enough; the window panes should be almost flush with the car side. I switched to .010" clear styrene but found that it delaminated and discoloured when cut. (I learned that .010" clear styrene is actaully two layers of .005" clear styrene laminated together!) My friend Jeff Briggs sourced some mylar for me which is about .009" thick and it cut easily using an Xacto knife with no discolouration. I cut four panes for each window opening so that I would have enough for all three coaches plus one extra. Here is a trial fit of windows on one side of the coach:

Prior to installing the window panes, I will attempt to edge them with a silver marker to represent the aluminium window frame. I will apply the decals after the windows have been installed.

So, after a quick vacation on the Italian Coast near Livorno/Pisa, I came back recharged and ready to work again. I had decent weather for a change that allowed me to paint again. We don't have A/C in the house in Germany so anytime the humidity gets fairly high, painting becomes a problem.

With that, here's the last stuff I finished up. The CITX SD40-2M is a unit for me, while the other three are for a friend on mine in Chicago... :)

I also built a page that shows all of the in-progress photos and steps I did to create the the CITX unit: http://www.lakeshoremodeltrains.com/custom_detailing_a_citx_sd40_2m.htm

Your friend has eclectic tastes. I get the WC & WSOR, but the FEC is a long ways from those two. Nice work!

finally took some photos of a building I've painted for the AustNtrak group's 'Camp Mabry corner module...
This building has a limestone facade that has a distinctive pattern of mold growth along the bottom of the long sides and across both short ends...I needed to capture this unique pattern.
The building is a special commissioned 3D printing drawn by Joe Cox...a few little details and it's on its way back to austin in time for the Temple Train Show.
    Thanks for looking,
    ~Bruce

During this last week of my summer holidays, I have been working to try and get some long term projects toward the finish line.

I suffered two significant setbacks with my scratchbuilt model of cook diner car BCOL 6508. The ORO decals I have been holding on to for ages were the wrong size and looked obviously so on the model. New decals had to be rendered and printed. More significantly, at some point one of the scratchbuilt vestibule steps vanished off the model, taking a piece of the floor with it. No idea when or where it went. No option but to build a replacement. In anticipation of another forthcoming passenger car build, I made four:

These are the Pullman three tread variety. Of ourse, the one which vanished off the model had to be the one with the quarter round housing for the brake chain on the top step. Here is the replacement:

The missing piece of floor was replaced, and the new step glued in place.

    Top View:

    Bottom View:

It now requires a coat of black paint to blend with the rest of the vestibule floor and underframe.

I also completed edging all of the windows for my three museum train coaches with a silver marker. Cutting out and edging 72 windows is something I would not care to repeat. Here is a trial fit of one side with windows edged - the effect is subtle but noticeable:

I also cut out strips of styrene to go behind the windows and represent the blinds. These coaches had sheets of plywood along the inside walls to protect the museum artifacts so the blinds were almost always down. These strips will be painted the appropriate colours:

So next up is window pane installation, window blind installation, and decals.

Another week, another rent-a-wreck for me.

Still need to finish weathering the engineer side battery box, but not bad overall. One of these days, I'll start experimenting with Z Scale couplers...

I made a mistake on my info concerning the creator of this beautiful, 3d printed structure...
The structure was beautifully drawn by Jim Donaldson!!! (I believe Joe commissioned Jim to draw it)...I apologize for the mix up![

    SOO LINE Fox Valley Models-Weathered

More weathering the last two weeks. One of two SOO Line FVM Boxcars I have on my workbench!
Weathered with cheap acrylic craft paint for the fade and rust spots, followed by oil chasers and powders. Stencil patch was airbrushed on.
Dullcote in-between the layers at the appropriate steps.
Bolsters filed down to lower this ride.

Yikes! One hard coupling and there'd be just trucks with a small pile of rust remaining!
