I just picked up a used Model Power 2-8-2 with a Vanderbilt tender and would like to install a Micro-Trains coupler on the pilot so that I can use the loco for helper ops (the loco already has an MT coupler on the tender). Has anyone here had experience installing an MT coupler on the pilot, and if so, it is it a difficult installation? Also, what are the recommended decoders I can use for this loco?
Thank you for the response, Bob. Will the MT z-scale coupler allow me to run the loco as a helper if the end-of-train is using an n-scale type - aka, on a caboose?
MT Z scale couplers mate very well with all N scale couplers. I double head steam locomotives all the time using MT Z scale couplers. As a maytter of fact, I use the MT Z scale # 905 couplers on the tender. Make sure you use the Z scale # 905 coupler,. It's already put together.
Thank you, Bob. An excellent article (including that regarding wheelsets) - the comparison shots of the couplers are worth their weight in gold! Thanks again.
I am starting my first N scale layout, and have started an elevator to load the cars (everything motorized), and am now working on the rotary dumper. The dumper will be fully operational (already got it turning) but heres where I need some advice. This unit will be USELESS to me if I cant uncouple the cars via control board. I need some links to where I can purchase the needed trucks and electric magnets to get this all set up. I have done a fair amount of research and want something that works. Thanks guys!
