I am slowly making progress on my Coast Line scene. I thought I would share it with the group. The two photos show the progression. I am sort of strugling with the water color a little too blue. Anyway hope you like it. JoeW
Awesome! The SP coast line has always been on my short list of places to model if I'm ever able to build a new layout.
Looks nice! I know what you mean about the blue in the ocean. Try a darker shade of blue. That lighter shade of blue is only seen in beaches with lighter/white sand, which we don't have in California. I also recommend you try to model floating kelp in the sea - a common sight in California beaches.
Beautiful beach. It's so nice I feel like I'm back there in my Army days, ready to go for a delightful swim and flounder in the undertow with the sharks.
Try adding a little "sea foam green" to the blue, and darken just a bit. That will give both the "kelp" look, as well as a bit more variation. Now all you need is a GS4 + Morning Daylight running past that scene, with surfers on the beach (and one bonfire made of driftwood). (humming Surfin' Safari right now)
Joe, I don't see you 'struggling' with anything - sweet layout, neat pix! You've definitely captured the feel of the Coast Line. Don't be too quick to judge the ocean too blue - remember that prototype colors change with the time of day and weather. I've found some of my best modeling results from "mistakes," so don't be hard on yourself re colors. Great weathering of the Geep and train. Scott
Scene depicts Ortega Hill The scene depicts an area a few miles south of Santa Barbara known as Ortega Hill. I have been working from pictures sent to me by other SP railfans and some photos in published books on the subject of the California coast line. I have passed the area a few times myself but have never stopped. It has only been recently that I would know how to get the specific place (Google maps). Thank you for the kind words and encouragement. JoeW
Wow!! Outstanding work!! And it's always a good thing to see another California layout here. Keep us posted
Joe, Where you been hiding? Good to have you here on TrainBoard. Your ocean scene with the SP local is awesome. Keep coming back.
