Thanks for the pic, next time my wife says I have too many engines, I'll show her this so she can see I still have a ways to go!

    You are welcome Train Kid.
I suggest you do a few different designs for the space you have and measure the storage capacity in inches.
Take pics and share if you can.
The photos were of the blue board on the ground and me standing on a latter.

    Two more:

You can see how the compound ladder can store more in the same length but is a little deeper.

I did this study a while ago because I love storing as much as possible on the layout.

You're actually asking about a "ladder." You might search that.

A compound ladder is indeed preferable from a storage point of view, all else being equal.

I did. Searched for about 30 minutes. ;)

Couldn't come up with anything specific like is being posted in this thread.

Good information in this thread. Thanks.

I have more locomtives that aren't shown in the photo. I rotate the thirty odd locomotives every few weeks.

One of the things I've thought about doing was to add an escape route for locos if they "head in" to a one way yard. This would be just enough track and a turnout to allow the power to disconnect from the train and then run around and re connect to the trailing end so it's ready to go as another train. Might work better for operations instead of picking the locos up and re-positioning them after the train pulls into the yard if your space allows.

Hi, maybe this will give an idea of a basic yard, that can be switched without fouling the main.
It's very basic, more length would be much better.
The yard lead must be as long as the longest yard track.

Thanks. I've been experimenting based on some things I have seen in this thread. I'd like a compound ladder but don't really have the room for it. I have something I think will work. It's just a staging yard not really operational which is OK with me. So...

I'll take a picture later and post it!

OK, here is what I came up with...

This small staging yard comes off my three main interchange. I did it this way to get three mains on my 4' X 8' layout since I have grades on both the two inside mains.
