Like you and me, Amtrak wants to buy some new locos and rolling stock: http://www.businessweek.com/news/20...on-of-train-equipment-purchases-update1-.html Look out for new models coming out in the next decade!
334 locomotives - that's around the size of their current fleet, isn't it? So it doesn't look like a planned service expansion, but a replacement of the Genesis and other power they have. So, what will a new passenger diesel look like?
I would assume that they aren't going to swap all their equipment. Though I keep hearing how worn out the Genesis units are. I would think what it looks like depends largely on who wins the contract to build it. I wouldn't be the least suprised if at least some of them will be MP40s in order to augment the F59PHI fleet. This is totally random, but I wonder if EMD could retrofit an F40 with an ECO rebuild and add a seperate hep Engine in that package? I would think that would extend the value for money spent.
All of the locos will be for the North East Corridoor and most of the cars will be baggage cars. Almost of the the pre-Amtrak cars will be retired as soon as the new cars are delivered. As it is getting hard to find parts for the cars built in the 40-50's.
