What do folks use for guard rails along a road (street)? I've been trying to find something in the different store listings, but am either not searching correctly, or there doesn't seem to be anything out there.

    Rick-

It depends on the era. I have scratchbuilt what I thought appropriate for a 1930's construction. I didn't find anything pre made out there either for my era.

Apparently, the product for newish rails exists. If they are acceptable, I suggest you purchase the same from one of Trainboard's advertisers.

If you shop around you can get these a bit cheaper. Plaza Japan has them for $10.50 Guard Rails and Road Fences - Kato 23-213 - eBay Kato, N Scale, Model RR, Trains, Toys Hobbies. (end time 31-Mar-10 18:54:44 AEDST)
and Hobby World for 800 yen (just under $9) HWJapan
. Still cheaper even after you add postage from Japan.

If you want the typical US metal-type guardrails, Gold Medal Models makes an etched kit. There are pictures in the long "ATSF line started" thread by Jerry DeBene, if you can find them...:)

I went back and checked Jerry's thread, and found them (around pg 185). Thank the software for the thread searching capability!

I made mine with 1/32" square posts and the thinnest (smallest diameter) piano wire I could find. Wire was typical in the 1950s, my era. It was a LOT cheaper than buying anything I could find.

Our advertisers might sell you Gold Medal Models products at a small discount from buying direct, as GMM sells at their MSRP, if I recall correctly. And the stores might ship more quickly if they have an item in stock.

I've ordered direct and I've ordered through stores, with quicker results through the latter.

I really like GMM products--no, I absolutely love and endorse their products--every sheet they produce is top quality! I've probably bought about $1000 worth of their product (mostly for my N-Scale ships). Perhaps more.

If every manufacturer produced this quality of goods, I would be in heaven.

I have used the GMM guardrails and they are real nice and very easy to form, I'd recommend them!

    Use Flex Track

Someone in H0 scale user a piece of flex track with one of the rails removed. Then he spaced the ties to be the posts and buried the ties in the ground. The remaining rail became the "guard" portion of the guard rail. This might work in N scale if the rail was small enough. It would be a little different from the more common guard rails that we normally see. I want to try it but haven't gotten that far.
