Do you guys think this: Is a good enough model for this: I'm not as good as some of you here at custom painting (insert STEVE's name here ) but it looks to me that with the paint and decals it would work. Comments?
The model is a Kato SD70MAC. The proto is an SD75i. I can see the left side behind the cab and the handrail is different, so I'm probally barking up the wrong tree. I'm wanting to paint up something different than the roads offered by Kato. Anyone know who else uses this engine with the nose headlight?
Ron, You can take modellers licence and as long as you are happy then why not paint it. Yes the prototype has battery boxs which you maybe able to modify but really how many people will notice when the loco is on the layout? If you really want to do it I think you should go for it. Anyway I'm sure some of the guys here can offer help on how to modify the model if you choose to go that way. Good luck and look forward to seeing some pics.
ron i have 26 c44-9w painted for cp rail. simply because at that time no n scale ac4400 were available. for me it was close enough. i'd say go with the sd70 even if the prototyp is a sd75. btw, i have several tfm sd70 as well. could be i'll paint some onr units as well.
Athearn has an SD75I. Soaking the shell in alcohol seems to take care of the glue issue and paint. Once apart it should be as easy to paint as the kato unit.
When I painted up my ICG unit. I didn't want to ruin the factory painted shell just incase I wanted the original paint back. So I bought a spare unpainted shell for five bucks or so. This way I didn't feel like I was ruining a nice factory model. But you may be more experienced than I was with my modelling skills so the ruining factor may not exist.
