The bad thing about reading glasses is that in time you'll be in the category that has to wear glasses all the time like the rest of us four eyes.

I know three different people in the ast trainclub who gave up N scale [or in one case, HO scale that went to G scale] in order to enjoy the same level of visible detail they once enjoyed in N scale - like reading car numbers. The HOn3 crowd has grown a bit in that club as well, particularly since the Blackstones came out and a couple memebrs are prominently involved with the Narrow gauge.

I know a couple who have switched to N as well. I guess it really depends on waht you can live with and what you ae after. There's not going to be much difference either way!

I am 88 years old and still modeling. I use the type of magnifiers that your dentist uses or should be using. I know because I'm a retired dentist and the first time I ever put them on I wanted to do evrything over.
Tip: when you hit 70 start giving your age in Celsius.

Wow Art, 88 why you’re an inspiration and my hats off to you sir. I only hope that I can still run trains at 88.

I had poor eye sight most of my life, but I got lucky and ended up with cataracts so bad that I was blind in one eye and could barely see out the other. I tried faking it the best I could so as not to lose my job.

Finally I mentioned it to my doctor and he set me up with eye surgery. Now I’m 20/20, but of course they still can’t do anything about the need for reading glasses. The doctor did give me a choice if I wanted to be far sighted or near sighted, so since I was near sighted all my life I choose farsighted. I don’t know if I made the wrong choice, but I sure love driving with regular sun glasses and buying my reading glasses at the dollar store.

I have a Magnifying glass with a circular fluorescent light around the glass. It works great except that it’s attached to my workbench with an adjustable arm. Someone gave me a visor Magnifying glass, but I keep forgetting to buy batteries for it, so I don’t know how well it works.

Where can I find some information about the type of magnifiers that your dentist uses?

Just Google in "Dental and Surgical Loupes" and you can start shopping. I don't think you would have any trouble purchasing a set as a civilian but your dentist might get them for you at a discount.

I went to G for a while. I found that at the distance you watch G scale it works out about the same as the distance you watch N scale. Unless you are right on top of your rolling stock you can't see the reporting numbers anyway. Also, I didn't like the heft of G. It takes two hands to handle a G scale box car and 2 fingers to handle an N scale box car. Also, room for a layout isa big G factor. Better have a large backyard or a huge basement. It is amazing how small a space you can get N into.
