In N Scale about 50% is D&H but that number is growing as more models are produced and or found on eBay, etc. http://www.trainweb.org/dhvm/models/n_scale.htm
Thirdrail brought up a good point about rolling stock. Most of my locos are PRR, with a few New Haven thrown in, plus my own unnamed branch. But my rolling stock? Well, I have 30 PRR passenger cars, if you want to count Con-Cor as representative of PRR. At least they are painted PRR. I'd say about 10% of my freight cars are PRR. Since I'm freight car poor at this time, that would bring my overall percentage to less than 50%.
I model the Conrail Shared Assest area and my freight car fleet is 10% CR, 5% NS, 4% CSXT, and 38% private (mostly tank cars). Locos are 60% NS, 40% CR. Bob.
My freight car fleet is about 25% SP (including Golden West Service), 25% Santa Fe, and 25% TTX, with the last 25% being various roads. My locos are all either Santa Fe or SP/SSW/DRGW. I model Tehachapi in the mid 90's, and try to stay true to the locale and era w/ my purchases
100% But I've only an SW1200 Cow & Calf. Can't get anymore till I find a job. Now to fiqure out how to get a bigger picture. By the way it's a Wisconsin Central. Maybe this second image will be better. Nope [ 21. September 2004, 01:20: Message edited by: Short round ]
I would say a splash of (GN) Omaha Orange and Pullman Green or (D&RGW) Aspen Gold and Silver in an evergreen forest would be a close tie... My fleet is predominately BN, with liberal amounts of GN, NP, and CB&Q stuff tossed in. A very small minority of the fleet is eastern/Canadian/lease roads. Lately, I have been concentrating on Rio Grande, with 3 locos, and several freight cars. My varnish fleet is mostly GN smoothsides, and CB&Q Budds.
My, how time has changed things, and my focus... D&RGW has now usurped BN from the top spot in the engine roster department, about 75-25% in favor of the Aspen Gold. In rolling stock, BN still rules supreme, with a healthy mix of BN predecessors. D&RGW is catching up, however. Lately, rolling stock purchases have about ground to a halt...
Currently I am at about 25% GN, 15% SP&S, 10% NP, 15% logging lines, and the rest is made up of various roads and private owners. Only a few of the dreaded Borg inhabits my lines.
I did some research, and I found that in 1998, 48% of all freight cars were privately owned, while the other 52% were railroad-owned. Here are the %s for all cars: 29% covered hoppers 18% tank cars 15% gondolas 13% hoppers 12% boxcars 11% flatcars ..2% reefers <1% other For my Kisatchie, Gulf & Northern, I'm aiming at 25% KG&N freight cars and 50% locos. According to my roster, I have more Pennsy equipment than anything else, but PRR is right at 10% of my roster Since my return to N Scale, I've taken the smorgasboard approach. Having at least one or two NTrak runners for each North American railroad I "like" really messes up the percentages. The equipment accumulated to run the Rockport and Cranberry Cove at home consists of 5 locos and less than 30 cars so far. Not even a blip on the charts percentagewise.
95% Boston & Maine power, 50/50 accurate and free-lanced. One Consolidation lettered for the Beebe River Railroad of Ipswich, MA, my brother's company. Three RDC-1s lettered for the Saucier & Southern of Gulfport, MS. Let your imagination run wild...nobody can bother you if you don't let them in.
