Somewhere, I'd swear having seen mention of S scale modules. And some standards for them. Right now, I'm stumped as to where. Or is my mind playing tricks on me?

The NASG (National Association of S Gaugers) has module standards. I don't know if you can get them off their site if you aren't a member. The Bay Area S Scalers had some modules but I don't remember if they were modified or NASG standards.

    Hi All:
The NASG has changed their website to allow you to access and print their standards. You'll need adobe reader.

The Atlantic Coast S-Gaugers also has module standards on our website. It's at: http://www.trainweb.org/acsg/ These are based on the Baltimore area AF club module standards.

There's also a bunch of "we learned about it the hard way" module notes that a friend and i typed up and the webmaster has posted at the site. May or may not be useful to you, depends on your level of experience.

    Regard'S',
    Ted

Hope they help, Boxcab. Are you going to join a modular club or use the info to build your home layout?

    Hi Greg:
Wandered over here from The-Gauge. Figure if i hang out on enough boards maybe i'll find enough S-Gaugers to form a quorum!

Always looking for good info. and a better/less expensive way to do things. Saw you are working on a layout. Hope you'll post a few pics as you go. I'm currently adding a bunch of Flyer uncouplers to my modules so i don't have to reach over to uncouple everything at shows. Also tuned up an engine and am trying to fix a Flyer 963-G that developed a cracked rear end at a recent show. Do you know what type of glue works best on Flyer 1953 plastic?

Looking forward to "talking" with y'all over here at the "TB".

    Regards,
    Ted

Well Ted, I don't have a clue about the AF plastic and which works best. If you aren't a member of the S-trains on Yahoo you should join. They are predominantly Flyer oriented and could help you I'm sure.
For me, I have been in scale S with code 100 track and Kadee's since I started. The layout will probably be built modular, but not for a modular group. I will be trying my hand at building or kit bashing some switches on it. So you bet I will keep you all posted here. It will be slow I'm sure, since I have to do that with room prep and garage clean up and so on.

    Cheers,
    Greg

    Ted-

Due to an ongoing health problem, I am forced to seriously contemplate a size change. I am a model railroader of over 45 years. Now in N scale for my 33rd season.

As a youth, I had Lionel O, O-27, and AF S. Never lost my love for the 1945-1969 era stuff. However, I don't want to collect. I wish to operate. And scale DC two rail is where I wish to be.

I've a limited space available. (10 by 14 room.) A limited budget. O scale is nice. But more expensive than S. Nothing gainst HO. But it's never turned me on. And may not be a big enough step up to surmount what I must.... Am fascinated by the Hayden/Frary HOn30. But again, probably too small. On30 is neat. (Look at what Paul Templar is doing. Wow!) But I want to try for the more prototypical main line setting.

So I have been busily perusing S scale of today. Hanging out here. Asking questions. Learning. Greg and a couple of others have graciously been helping me along.

As far as joining a modular, or any group, there is none anywhere within hundreds of miles. Although there are a few N scalers, and some HO folks, most are lone wolves. There are a couple of On30 guys in the region. But a six hour round trip to visit isn't much fun.

    The exploration continues!

    Hi Greg:
I'll be watching your turnout making progress. Bookmarked a website that sells the turnout templates. Don't know when, but i will one day replace my gargraves track and AF turnouts with something more "scale like". This will allow me to better use my limited module space by being able to more closely space my tracks. Expect i'll use American Models or S-Helper flex. They have few turnout options so am thinking i will make mine.

Boxcab: The change from N to S i expect will be will be both positive and negative. On the downside, the scope of your layout will shink due to the shift in modeling scale. On the plus side, the level of detail you can achieve is amazing, the selection of equipment is growing be leaps and bounds, and the ease with which you can animate the layout grows with the increase in size, i find that aspect fun. There is an S-Scale group on Yahoo that may be of use to you.

Look forward to modeling with you.

    Regards,
    Ted

    Ted-

I've made many long time good friends in N scale. So will certainly miss them when the time arrives. I'm moving ahead slowly. Learning as much as possible beforehand. So it won't be too much overload. Look forward to hearing what's happening on your end.

    Hi Boxcab:
I don't see why you'd stop hanging out with your N-gauge buddies. One thing i've learned in modeling is that i can learn from and share experiences with folks in any gauge. In fact, with anyone who models anything. I've modeled in HO, S, built a TON of plastic cars, planes, ships, tanks, people, built and flown u-control airplanes, R/C airplanes and now i design 1:1 buildings for a living. I wouldn't look at it as moving on, just expanding your horizons.

Also, N gauge trains make great carnival or town park train rides. Just the right scale for S gauge people to sit in and ride around the park with their kids on a Sunday afternoon. So you can still do some modeling in N, as long as it doesn't pain you too much to cut the tops off your passenger cars and glue in some "S" size benches!

    Regards,
    Ted

    Hi Ted-

When the day arrives, it will be rather difficult. I do hope to maintain contact with old friends.

You are correct about expanding horizons. That has already happened through chatting here. With you, Don, and Greg.
