I have been chasing 844 for the last three years with my Grandson, who is now 5. We live in Lincoln, NE., and have seen it parked :/ about four times, but have never seen it go by. You would not believe the deprivation & discomfort that little boy has endured just to see that engine.......& STILL hasn't! Is there a website that will give a RELIABLE schedule for the thing, so we don't have to sit in cornfields for four hours for nothing?? He ( & Grandpa ) biggrin: want to see it really bad!! (so far, we have been operating based on rumors & hearsay, obviously not working out well) We would sure appreciate any help you pros could give............
Union Pacific's website has a section on steam operations, and they keep it up to date. Usually they post the complete itinerary a few weeks in advance, and have a link to a GPS tracker so you can follow the progress real time. I don't have the URL handy, but I'm sure if you Google Union Pacific, maybe even add Steam operations, you will find it. Hope this helps. :tb-biggrin:
I just wanna add something to this, since the loco is still U.P capital inventory and has never been retired, she is sometimes used in a pinch to haul revenue freight. At least I have seen photos to that effect. It seems possible to me that might somehow bollix up the "public" timetable for operations. Charlie
It isn't used as a revenue engine. Occaisionally when it is being deadheaded, it may haul some freight. But it is not used for revenue service, even as a backup engine.
This is the website that Fitz referred to in his post. http://upsteam.com/schedule.html#schedule I used this when the 844 came south in April, and it was spot on. Regards Ed
"Ed M"..........."Thank you", that's what I was looking for. Anyone got more detail on the Omaha to North Platte to Omaha excursion coming up in Nov.?? ( probably can't afford it, but it might be fun to try
Probably not out for general information just yet. According to the website, "Ticket prices and details will be posted in June, with tickets going on sale in July." I'd bookmark the site and just check back there every few days until they update it with some details on the trip. Regards Ed
Just updated today, tickets for the Council Bluffs to North Platte excursion in November are scheduled to go on sale August 17. UP: 2010 Steam Schedule
