i kind of hate to bring this subject up, been scolded a few times about the subject, not here though. however, i like it just fine. just need bigger curves along with a decent turnout. i have an around the walls setup, all 4 walls, 12 x 10 and sure miss those big curves that flex allows. that 12.5 radius makes the double track spacing really wide in my opinion. the real reason for this post is to see if i can attach a picture. every site is different, here goes.....
Hello and welcome to Trainboard, where you will most likely NOT be harrassed for posting info about track. Of course, occassionally we do have diverse opinions about products, but if we keep them constructive rather than distructive or otherwise 'bashing' a manufacturer... everything should be okay. Your picture post was good and shows the Atlas Tru-Track and Kato Unitrack very well. I figured I would comment on this because there were so few replies to your thread (none actually). I happen to like the appearance of Atlas Tru-Track over that of Kato Unitrack. Bear in mind, I am an avid user and regularly 'promote' Unitrack as an excellent way to get trains running quickly. Because I have so much invested in Unitrack, I probably am not likely to change-over to Atlas Tru-Track. The Tru-Track system is still in its 'infancy' compared to Unitrack in so far as track segments and options available. I feel at some point in the future, if Atlas does not abandon the product [by not expanding track segments], it will surpass Unitrack in sales and desireablility. Those who are presently building layouts using Tru-Track are the 'pioneers' for this Atlas product... just as there were pioneers a couple of decades ago when Unitrack was in its infancy. Those folks who stick with Atlas and encourage them to expand the line of track segments will play a very big part in its development and future success or failure.
hey Joe, i dont understand why atlas doesn't get moving on new pieces since they have gone this far. im a big curve guy, so the 15.5 radius curves seem sharp to me. they desparately need at least a no. 4 turnout and a 19 in. radius curve. the kato quality and selection is a no-brainer. i guess i got used to looking at the atlas code 55 for so long and not used to the code 80 appearance. i got frustrated on ballasting and sold all my code 55 rail. some looked good and some i never did get right. i already know that i have no regrets using either true track or unitrack. so much easier and faster and easy to change the track around. im probably going to stay with true track for awhile, but if no new pieces become available, i'll use unitrack.......
We are using Tru-Track at our club for a small HOn30 layout. One of our members is very into this scale, and I'm helping out. The track seem like a good product, though it's not as robust as Unitrack. It looks very good, and operates well. I think it's a better looking track (than Unitrack) for N scale. I think Atlas will expand this track line, though I am only speculating. I don't have any inside information. By the way, I'm a Unitrack guy with no intention of changing. I have too much invested in it, and I really like it. If I were starting out today which track would I use? Probably Unitrack, though I would really think about Tru-Track.
I've been told some negative things about it at a couple of hobby shops, but I think that was mostly a push to get me to buy the unitrack they had in stock since they did not carry true track. I have an oval's worth of true track but I agree that a few more curved pieces and another turnout would greatly improve its appeal.
Welcome to Trainboard! While I'm pretty much built-out with Atlas C55 flextrack, I think the Tru-Track is a fine product. Atlas typically expands their product lines over a period of time. It may not be as fast as we would like, but they have to marshall resources to make new products. You won't find much scolding here--maybe some joshing among more senior members. We emphasize that "It's your railroad!" so have fun with it.
I'm using it! I plan on making my new layout (10'X12') with it. You don't have to make your double track spaced so far. I do hope they come out with more pieces soon. Here's a pic of it on a layout.
nice! how did you do the bridge? did you cut away part of the roadbed, or use a piece of code 55? looks great. mine is also 12x10, around the walls. thanks for the pic....
Yes I cut away the roadbed. Then glued wooden ties under it. I',m going to use a Central Valley bridge in another location and Micro-engineering bridge track through it. Their code 70 bridge track looks like it won't need much modification to connect to True-track. Here's the bridge.....
If you want more selection in True Track, you can go to Atlas' website, and click the "contact" button. Send 'em a note telling them what you'd like to see and why. I know the Atlas people do drop by here and other forums, but a quick "message to headquarters" won't hurt anything. I did this with the TrainMaster in SP grey, and the next run, there it was.
I like the look of TruTrack, thanks to your photo. North American-style tie spacing, and finer code rail looks very nice compared to Unitrack. I have yet to actually see TT, so I'm basing this off the photo you provided. I'm a recet convert to Atlas C55, so I appreciate the revamp Atlas gave their track lines, to be more US-specific.
my daughter took that picture with her phone. i'll try to get some better ones next time. atlas says there are more true track pieces in the thought process and they are not dropping the true track line. i wonder how long it takes to make available new pieces once they decide which ones will be made? changing the color will be easy, although i like it the way it is. i changed this piece with cheap water base paint, thinned with water...
New to N scale, but I'll hafta say that I love my tru-trak. It fit together so good an so quiet. I just ordered another batch of TT to expand my layout. I have already went to the atlas site an ask for a coup-la things in TT, maybe they'll come thru with them
me too! its time. mine is touchy though when it comes to electrical contact between sections. once its setup and running, its fine. but when i change the track around, i will have a dead spot. not a big deal, i use a flathead screwdriver to place between the track sections at the joiner until the engine takes off. i then give that joiner a little squeeze with the needlenose pliers and problem solved.
Those little .97 cent bottles of paint from wal-mart are the way to go IMO. My wife works there an gets another 10% off, so I am in'em about 88 cents each. I have one of about every color they have there. They go a lot farther than I thought they would too... P.S. just looked, mine are all 2 oz bottles
