My Penn Lake locomotives are detailed like Reading units, and painted like Delaware & Hudson units.

A few of the RS3s actually started out as Atlas factory painted Delaware-Lackawanna units, that I relettered for Penn Lake, while keeping all the striping. For the rest I used Highball Graphics D&H decals..applying the nose striping is a royal pain.

Recently, I have gone back and started adding the actual Reading detailing: rain gutters, Nathan M-3 horns, firecracker antenna, and dynamic brakes (not added yet).

Today I added the dynamic brakes to my RS3 projects...

I made the brake grids from Cannon & Company radiator screens. Of course after I did, I found the parts from Miniatures by Eric.

And the RS3s are finished. The two passenger units still need handrails and headlight lenses, but other then that everyone is detailed, painted, decalled, and DCCed.

Penn Lake #4058 is representative of the dynamic equipped freight units:

Both the Reading and D&H painted thier bells the same color as the frame. I paint mine brass so they stand out. Plus I just think brass bells are neat looking.

    Great job!

I did an Atlas RS-3 recently in CNR green and yellow. I know what kind of fun you had. :D

    Nice work!

Didn't know the RS-3 had dynamics in the short hood... so I guess that means steam generator equipped units did not have dynamic brakes??

The RDG dynamic brake vent was smaller and there are intake vents under the numberboard.

Detail Associates sells a dynamic brake vent that is listed for Alco Centruries, but it is the right size for RDG units. Archer Fine Transfers sells door vents that are resin on decal film so are easy to apply.

Note the small, taller vent on this unit and vents in the door on the side of the hood.

Also note the RS3 models made are ALL boiler equipped frames with the water tank between the air tanks. Note the "hole" under the 484 and 491 (both DB equipped units).

RS3's can have both boilers and DB but it requires a high short hood (sold by Smokey Valley). This LV unit came with both:
