I am intending to repaint an F-3 A-B-A set to the Jersey Central blue and tangerine color scheme. Does anyone know which of the Polly Scale colors would give the closest match. I use Polly Scale, mostly because of easy availability. Anything that works will do.

By the way, has Paul Mach shown up yet. He is the master of all things relating to New Jersey rails [IMG] .

Rich Yourstone has some gorgeous blue and tangerine CNJ units he showed on the Atlas forum. Have not seen him here, nor on The Railwire, so don't know where he's hanging out.

Thanks Thirdrail, here's a pic of the F3's:

I used 1 part MEC harvest gold/2 parts Reading yellow for the tangerine (both Pollyscale), and modelflex C&O Enchantment Blue darkened with a bit of B&O blue. Seemed pretty darn close.

Those are the finest painted and weathered F units I have seen in a very, very long time. I've always been partial to that scheme but, objectively, these are beautiful units.

    Hi Rich
Thanks for the info on the paint scheme. As noted by others, you have done a superior job of weathering. That was a fine article in NSR.

Okay, I'm here. Someone told me that my name was mentioned and decided to see how all the Atlas Forum members are doing.

Thanks, Len, but Rich is the one who deserves the credit for his knowledge of New Jersey railroading and his superb modeling.

Now, Rich, here's a modeling project for you: a CNJ GP40P. What do you think?

That would be a tough one, maybe use the angled radiator grills from a SD-45 shell and scratchbuild a new rear end. For the consist you just need a bunch of GN and BN coaches. I'm going to attempt some extended-cab Reading SD-45's pretty soon, if that fails I suppose I'll have a bunch of extra SD-45 parts.

Thanks everyone for the comments on the F3's. These are the new Kato shells on the old chassis. To save money on decoders I put a DN140 in the B unit and permanently MU'ed the two together - with 16-wheel pickup they run pretty nice too!

    Hi Paul
Good to see you back in circulation. I tried visiting your web page , but all the photo files were locked. Are you still under construction? I was especially interested in your Newark terminal photos. If only I had a decent camera back in those days. During the mid 50s I went to school in Newark. The Public Service bus was the normal mode of travel, but when I had spare change, I would hike down Broad St. and treat myself to a train ride.
The new Kato F-3s run like you would expect, even on DC. The decoders came in today ,but unfortunately, the Zephyr control box had to go back to Digitrax for repair. It will run trains, but the programming outputs were dead out of the box. Each attempt at programming resulted in an open circut message on the display. All connections were soldered, track was clean, etc. I feel like a kid waiting for it to come back.
I found the colors for the tangerine part of the repaint. No dice on the modelflex blues. I will try mixing the PollyS B&O plus CSX blue and testing on a sheet of styrene.

    Cheers

That's odd that the pictures aren't showing up. The site was built months ago and this is the first that I'm hearing that there is a problem. Could you try it again?

Rich - Ex-N-scaler Brian Banna modeled one of the RDG SD-45's with the extended cab. He said it wasn't too difficult. This was another case of what is the correct Reading Cream color? The custom SD45 does not match the factory (Atlas/Kato) GP35. :(

As luck would have it, I tried your site this morning and it worked fine. Possibly a problem with my ISP??
I was hoping you had some pics of the old Broad St. terminal. I have seen a couple of poorly lit pictures that may have come from the American Memory archive at the Library of Congress. That site is a real treasure. I am sure you know about this site, but just in case, here is the url http://memory.loc.gov/
Learning to navigate may take some time, but well worth it. I was going to include the url of a neat pic of the jersey city terminal with the trade center towers in the background, but the url was a mile long.

If I pull of the F-3 repaint in a satisfactory manner, the Reading will be my next victim. I have a SD-45 in Southern Pacific colors that needs to match my Reading SD-45. If IM ever comes out with their F-3, that will be another project. So much to do, so little time.

    Cheers
