Saturday, September 25, 2010 was a bad day for railroads battling slippery topography. A total of three landslides in three different countries resulted in some spectacular derailments, which fortunately resulted in few injuries and no deaths - but the pics are spectacular. Here's the scene after a milk train encountered a landslide at 5 a.m. in the Manawatu Gorge in New Zealand: Not long thereafter, in the Indian state of Kerala, the Thiruvananthapuram-Mangalore Express wound up getting itself buried: The cream of the crop is a landslide at St-Lazare in western Quebec caused by unusually heavy rainfall. The astonishing dimensions of the resulting muddy catastrophe are vividly illustrated by a photo published on the Web site of the Montreal Gazette: Kudos to Dave's Landslide Blog for the news and links. --Bryan
