Does anyone have a couple layouts?

I have spent years trying to build the perfect layout to no avail. What about building many small operating layouts that serve a different purpose.

I am in the process of building a small oval layout as a roundy roundy runner. I am also thinking about a shelf layout for some switching. I figure even if the switching layout isn't done I can run on it in it's pink world state.

I also like european stuff and a Swiss alps roundy roundy with really steep scenery could be fun too.

Yes, I have 2 layouts. One is my large 1:35n2 Mogollon Railway (1:35 scale running on 16.5MM gauge) and the other is a small 2 by 4 foot Gila Tramway in On20 (O scale running on 10.5MM gauge) which I can take to shows and meets. I spend far more time on the big layout since that is my main interest, but love to watch the little layout as the train goes round and round. If you are interested, I can send the links in a private message.

I currently have 2 layouts. My old 4x8, and my new much larger one still in the painfully slow construction phase. The end result will be to connect the two via a helix into a large multi-layered layout.

Not at present, but I have in the past. I do have On30 equipment aside from my N scale. And some day....

No, not really. My day dream is to have a garden layout in "G" gauge / scale along with my N scale layout. That requires winning the lottery so, unless you hear different I only have one layout. < sigh >

    I have more than one.

I have my ~5'x9' AD&N layout. I have learned a lot from this layout.

I have my 1'x4' Macey Yard switching layout. This one is in my office.

I am working on a small Unitrack layout with and for my daughter.

I am gathering materials to build a small 2'x4' test layout with Code 55. I've never fooled with it before and I want to check it out.

And I am in the planning stages for a much larger AD&N layout.

I guess that I have more than one layout.

The first is my home layout. It's been around in one form or another since 1983 and looks pretty good now if I do say so myself.

Then there is the layouts at the history center. I build them for display. the first is a 4 x 6 layout in On30. The kids can run it with a pushbutton. They hold it, it runs. they let off and it stops.

    The next one is my current project. It's a 4 x 8 HO with a 2x6 yard extension. That's a very long railroad. :)

    Oh, well.

I have my very own N-scale 2 1/2' x 5' layout. But I am also doing a significant portion of my parents HO layout (appox 10'x20'+9'x9'), and am a regular constructor on my brother's HO layout (appox 12'x24'). Each has their own personality, of course, so it's actually pretty cool.

But, there's only so much time in the day, of course, so my time gets spread out pretty thin. For example, I haven't even unpacked my N-scale layout in the past couple of years, while I spend time on finishing out the carpentry, track, and wiring on my parents layout.

I have both a HO and N scale layout in the same room. The HO is around the room and shaped as a square figure 8. It will be a semi urban industrial based operation. The N scale is based off the CG in middle GA. It is more to time and era then the HO which is more freelanced. I always have something to do on either layout. I could get more done if I only worked on and in one scale but i do enjoy both the N and HO.

I have either 3 or 4, depending on how you count...

The main ATSF layout in N, 5' 6" x 8' (semi-modular, it can be torn down and moved)

The "Hickory Valley" N logging layout, 18x36 inches, portable, featured in MR in '86

The new "Ross Run" N logging module, 21x42 inches, portable, not sceniced yet.

And an HO storefront layout that I effectively take care of - just keep it running - I didn't build it. It's a two-train, sceniced 5x9 layout with pushbutton controls on the street. It's more like work than a layout.

I am working on 2 at the moment. My dad and i have been building a Ho and a n scale layout. Both are in the same room Just 2 different layers. the Ho is on the bottom and the N is on the top. The N scale is a mississippi river/canada scenes. The HO will be modeled after chicago.

I've got three micro layouts; an HOn30 switching layout based on the Maine 2 footers, an HOn30 'pizza' layout which is currently unsceniced and usually used as a test loop. The third is an HO standard gauge switching layout which has minimal scenery and gets use with my other scales that use 16.5mm gauge (1/35n2 and On30). I'm thinking about starting an HOn2 (runs on Z gauge track) sugar cane line based on the Moreton Mill in Australia and have a small collection of Japanese prototype logging models that I intend to build something for someday.

My "main" layout is in N. I have a small 4' x 6' HO layout, a 2' x 4' HO module, and then there is the 4' x 8' O-27 layout. But I don't really have two layouts in the same scale that serve two separate purposes. My N layout is targeted to be a combination of B&O and C&O in the mid-1950's - still kicking around the idea of having structures that are road specific that would be interchangeable (for example when I want to operate B&O, there would be an interlocking tower painted cream and brown; when I want to go C&O, I would replace the tower with one painted dark gray and light gray).

    Randgust,
1986 in which month? I quickly looked through my old MRs and could not find it.

    Thanks
    Dirk
