I have a question... How many people would drop everything and switch to HOn3 if Blackstone models made one of these?

Maybe some would get into HOn3, but the SP narrow gauge is not "popular" like the Colorado lines. If you looked around, you might find WESTSIDE MODELS HOn3 brass replicas of SP #9 & #18..and I believe BALBOA made some also. Of course, you would have to "work" on them to get the operation of the new Blackstone K's. As one old timer said-"all you need to model the SP narrow gauge is some equipment, flex track, and lots of sand." Those old "whaleback" tenders were very cool.

Well, that one model can be used for several: SP #9 also ran on the Plaster City narrow gauge. Add air tanks over the boiler and you have a Nevada-California-Oregon #10. Change the paint on that and you have Pacific Coast #110. Change the paint once more and you have a fairly close Oahu Railway engine. Plus every California or Nevada or any other southwest narrow gauge freelancer will want one.

If Blackstone did make one, I'd probably model the San Diego, Cuyamaca and Eastern Railway; this line was originally intended to be narrow gauge. Or I may even jump to build a narrow gauge SD&AE. After all, with all the trouble to lay tracks in Carriso Gorge, narrow gauge would've been a feasible and cheaper alternative.

if they had a model of D&RGW 340....you could model the entire Calico and Ghost Town.....the main line is .75 miles an a loop, and still model a real SoCal railroad

    Tom,
If Blackstone produces SP locos in HOn3 I would be first in line to place an order. I would like something better than the old Westside brass units that I have.
Have been scratch building SP rolling stock since 1964.
It would be very nice if Blackstone could produce the SP 4-6-0's.

I have been tempted to give up the N scale and go to HOn3, but the severe lack of SP locomotives outs a halt to that line of thinking. It will still rank up there on the list of cool things to do though...

...Good point. If HOn3 wants more appeal they need a lot more than Rio Grande K-27's and C-19's. I'm guessing an SP 4-6-0 #8, C&S 2-6-0 #9, West Side Lumber Co. Shay #12, East Broad Top Mikado #14, Pacific Coast Ry. 2-8-0 #105, and an 1876 Baldwin 4-4-0/ 2-6-0 would ALL be appreciated. That basically covers most of the narrow gauge appeal...

...but an SP 4-6-0 is still desperately needed...

Yes, I would also like to see West Side Lumber Co. Shay #10 and #15 and the 1876 Baldwin 4-4-0. And the complete D&RGW "C" class from C-16 to C-21.

Heres a photo I took of the #10 at the Yosemite Mtn. Sugar Pine R.R.

You can find quite a few engines, but most are brass.
And if not Blackstone in most cases you have to work with the engine. You need better pick-up, a decoder, light; all those features the Blackstone engines already have.
This makes the price higher. Even if you can do a lot by yourself.

I'm still working with my SP#1. It's a JONAN model and I've added light, decals and some weathering as well as a simple decoder.

You see thats the whole reason why people like me buy Blackstone models. They are much cheaper alternative to brass imports that would hurt my wallet considerably and they dont need any additional upgrades. (unless you decide to go soundless). They are great but the problem is their selection is in short supply. Not to mention their products arent readily available and if you want one of their loco's you need to make reservations EARLY and wait a VERY long time. What I'm getting at is if Blackstone wants to become top dog in the "narrow minded" market, they need to start producing a wider selection of loco's and rolling stock and release them early and ON TIME. (C-19 was delayed until mid 2011, seriously why??!!!)

    BTW Nice brass Wolfgang :)
