I am returning to model railroading after a nearly 25 year hiatus and am planning an N-scale layout based upon Canadian National/Illinois Central's Waterloo division from Chicago to Iowa. The era is shortly after Wisconsin Central was aquired in the early 2000's. Does anyone know if the SD-40A or the standard cab SD-70 was ever produced in plastic or brass? Internet searches have produced nothing. What would be a good starting point to kitbash them? Which of the other SD-70 models is closest to the standard cab version? These are the only locomotives I haven't found commercially available that the IC runs today. Thanx:mcool:
Brass... However a guy in New Zealand built a few from Kato SD70Ms with SD40-2 noses and cabs a few years back.
Overland did them in brass. I kitbashed one from Athearn Kato and Atlas parts a while back. It was fairly easy. Jeff
Yes, photos always help. When I read a very interesting post describing something that is very intrigueing, and then no pictures...it is aggravating ! I too would like to see pictures of what your talking about here. fatalxsunrider43
Isn't the SD40A a stretched SD40 that had some SD40-2 features and a huge fuel tank? Between Kato SD40 & SD40-2, you should be able to get some good parts.
I think the IC SD70 spartan cabs resemble the NS units... I think both Kato and Athearn made SD70M units with the non-flared radiators. Would these be good starting points and add the spartan cab?
Thank you for the info, those photos are exactly what I need to get started on this. It's hard for me to justify spending the money on an experiment when I haven't detailed a loco in so long. I have been active in 1/35th scale armor since my last layout almost 25 years ago, so I'm not completely rusty with my modeling skills.
